After a tummy tuck, small surgical drains are sometimes placed under the skin to remove excess fluid that naturally builds up after surgery.
During a tummy tuck, the skin is lifted and tightened, and the abdominal muscles are repaired. Because space is created under the skin, the body can produce fluid in that area as part of the normal healing process. If that fluid stays trapped, it can lead to swelling, discomfort, delayed healing, or a collection of fluid called a seroma.
The purpose of the drain is to gently remove that fluid so the skin can heal smoothly back down to the underlying tissue. This helps reduce swelling, lowers the risk of complications, and can improve the overall result.
Drains are temporary and are usually removed once the fluid output becomes low enough, which means the body is healing the way it should.
Although drains can be inconvenient, they are often an important part of getting a safe recovery and the best possible outcome after a tummy tuck.
