For those of us who grew up in homes where we could not develop a healthy sense of closeness, we may find that we struggle in feeling close and safe in relationships.

This original wound may be further magnified when we go out into the world, not sure how to protect ourselves from danger in a way that also allows safe people in.

It is not always easy to develop a healthy sense of if we did not have a healthy caregiver, family of origin or a world/society to guide us on how to do that.

If you are wanting to develop in relationships, there are some key things you should know about the process.

Things that are not good for our mental well-being:

🗣 Unregulated Capitalism
🗣 Profit over people
🗣 Environmental degradation
🗣 Patriarchy
🗣 Racism
🗣 Homophobia and Transphobia
🗣 White Supremacy
🗣 Junk mail. Seriously

What would you add to the list? I left out many things.

I will be speaking more about how harmful cultural narratives are institutionalized in ways that harm our collective mental health in a future YouTube video! Yes! I’m going to make videos! Stay tuned to this space for more.

What would you like for me to speak more about here on Instagram or in my future content?

Did you know that staying busy can be a trauma response? It takes away from us being in the present moment. It’s something that I continue to struggle with.

Some of us who are survivors of trauma may struggle with habits that take us out of the here and now. Maybe we are taking on too many commitments. Maybe we are perfectionists and our to do lists never end. Maybe we have just ventured on a new project and we are having a hard time pacing the excitement energy. Maybe we jump into new relationships or ventures.

But whether it comes to:

🟣creative projects

🔵 achieving short or long term goals

🟣 relationships and intimacy

🔵 the fight for social, economic, and racial justice

one thing we must all learn is how to pace ourselves for the long haul.

How can you be more present in your day to day life?

Is there anything on your plate that you’re able to take off? Comment below!

To want to feel immediate relief from pain and trauma only makes sense. In our quest for healing, we will often experience ups and downs in our progress, moods, and ability to cope. We may feel disappointed and angry that healing is an often lengthy and maybe even a lifelong process, depending on what stressors we have been exposed to in our lives.

For those of us navigating oppressive societies, the is compounded. That’s many of us.

As we begin to and move towards a more and sense of self, it is important to grant ourselves the grace to remember that it took many years and many people reinforcing certain narratives for us to develop these concerns that we are now from.

Healing will take time.
Healing will be a process.

Healing will depend on the individual experiencing the journey but will also be impacted by the society that the individual is navigating.

The social policies and narratives we are swimming in greatly impact our mental health. Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

Gun violence, racial trauma, political corruption, lack of investment in public services and infrastructure, harmful cultural narratives centering colonialism and capitalism stating that people should be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps while conveniently ignoring the unpaid labor that allows some to thrive at the expense of others.. these are not the ingredients for being mentally well.

Without addressing those things, no amount of anxiety or trauma treatment in the world is really going to help. American society is inherently anxiety provoking and traumatic and even moreso for some than others. That’s why I left my job in community mental health to put my social justice values into action. The social service system just perpetuates the same toxicity that exists in society.

Grappling with it all can be overwhelming so we do what we can with the resources we have available. Without social justice and political action that promotes inherent human dignity and worth for all people, our chances for being a healthy and well society are limited. I didn’t want to work within that toxic system and I had a level of safety and privilege so I left.

I’ll be speaking more on how we can’t divorce the two concepts in future posts!

Donald Trump has appointed a loyal donor who has financial investments in competitors to the for his own political gain. He’s a dangerous fascist. We depend on the USPS for things like benefit checks, supplies that help us to stay inside, and important medications just to name a few. It is not okay for corporate greed to profit from crisis. Republicans have been trying to gut all that is public for years: they’ve made it clear that they stand for corporate greed above all else. Vote them all out. Are you voting in the FL primary? Deadline is this Tuesday!

is any event where we experience severe psychological distress that we are not able to cognitively process as we do everyday events and so unhealed trauma can have the potential to impact us in many ways.

Our physiological responses may be impacted. If we are of and a host of other situations and we are not able to process and heal from the pain of these experiences, the trauma may continue to impact our day to day, even if it’s not in our immediate awareness.

Unhealed Trauma can disrupt our:

💜 SENSE OF SAFETY
We may experience anxiety, hypervigilance, a sense of high alert 🚨 and the more often we experience or navigate traumatic situations, the more complex our symptoms may become. Trauma can negatively impact various parts of our brain 🧠 including the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, areas of the brain that regulate our “fight or flight” threat/fear response, our attention, decision making ability, and emotional regulation.

💜 SENSE OF SELF
If we have experienced assault, violence, abuse, neglect, danger, a life threatening situation, racism, sexism, and the many other situations that may cause and aggravate traumatic reactions, we may question our self worth depending on the situation. For children raised in abusive homes, they may internalize harmful messages about love, communication, and self worth.

💜 SAFETY IN CONNECTIONS
For those of us who have experienced relational trauma, we may have trouble with valuing ourselves, knowing what healthy behavior and relationships looks like, trouble identifying and asserting our boundaries, and we may also unknowingly attract people that trigger or re-injure us.

💜 CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Some of us who have experienced trauma may find art and creativity to be a healing outlet but unprocessed pain may also negatively impact our expression; we may feel less confident to pursue our artistic goals and ventures, we may struggle with authenticity and “imposter syndrome,” and we may spend a large amount of our emotional resources managing trauma symptoms leaving less space for creative hobbies and interests.
