Dr. Patounakis received his M.D. from Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and earned numerous academic excellence awards in addition to the Stanley S. Bergen Medal of Excellence, which was the school’s highest student honor. He completed his internship and residency in OB/GYN at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he served as Administrative Chief Resident. Dr. Patounakis pursued his fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. While at the NIH, his research focused on cholesterol transport in steroidogenic cells using live-cell microscopy, IVF outcome predictors, and genetic influences on infertility. Dr. Patounakis currently serves as the Medical Director of Reproductive Medicine Associates of Florida. He is also an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the University of Central Florida, College of Medicine. His research interests include statistical IVF cycle modeling, fertility preservation, and diminished ovarian reserve. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Fertility & Sterility and the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics. In his spare time, Dr. Patounakis goes to Disney World with his wife, Anna, and their two daughters, Katie and Ellie, pretending to be dragged there while secretly enjoying the scenery, rides and characters.

Happy World Embryologist Day!

Today is a day we celebrate all the embryologists who work incredibly hard to make people's dreams come true. I greatly appreciate all the time and the sacrifices they make to help grow families. I am also eternally grateful to the embryologists I have worked with who have taught me so much about the embryology lab so I can provide the best care to my patients.

A question I have been asked quite a bit recently is "Why does importing embryos to Shady Grove made previously at my former practice take weeks to complete?"

The answer is: quality assurance and safety.

In order to provide the highest quality of care and highest standards of safety, embryology labs must follow strict protocols for how they handle embryos. Every time the embryo is handled, there should be documentation that the embryologist verified it was the right embryo. Additionally, the egg and s***m the embryo came from must have also been verified. As you can probably imagine, the s***m, eggs, and ultimately the embryos go through a complex series of steps in the embryology lab. Careful review of all those steps and verification of proper identification takes time to complete. This needs to happen for every single patient and does not change even if we have verified the process for another patient from the same clinic. Every import request gets the same attention to detail as every other one.

This process can be very frustrating at times, particularly since I know you wanted to have your transfer already and be pregnant. Please understand that all these steps are necessary to assure the highest quality of care and most importantly your safety.
