ON NEEDING LOVE

Needing love is not the same as “being needy”.
These two things often get conflated.

Our primate bodies are quite literally hard-wired for love and social connection.
Our nervous systems require connection for survival.

There is this idea in spirituality that we should always find love within ourselves.
That all external “love seeking” is ego-driven, or comes from fearful conditioning, or comes from repressed emotion or trauma.
It’s not always true.

Of course, our need for love can manifest in distorted, unhealthy, even narcissistic ways for sure.

But at its root, needing love and connection is the most natural thing of all.

A baby needs their mother, or they will die.
It’s biological. Neurological.
As adults, we need empathic connection, or we collapse emotionally, spiritually, and eventually physically.

Let’s not shame ourselves for needing love.

Let’s find love within, of course.
But… let’s also take the brave step of letting ourselves be loved, by those who are able to love us.

Let’s take the brave and vulnerable step of letting ourselves be seen, heard, known, allowing others to truly meet us, and experience our authentic selves.
