Migraine or stroke? Knowing the difference could save your life.

While migraines affect 1 in 4 U.S. households according to the American Migraine Foundation some symptoms like vision changes or intense head pain can mimic a stroke.

Dr. Keith DeSousa, an interventional neurologist with HCA Florida Healthcare, shares that symptoms can sometimes be misleading and explains why understanding the distinction is critical: https://www.hcafloridahealthcare.com/healthy-living/blog/migraine-or-stroke-how-to-tell-the-difference.

- Check out this video from FOX 35 Orlando who shared the news about last week's AI and Innovation in Healthcare event at UCF Lake Nona Hospital!

Community leaders and Seminole County Public Schools high school students gathered Wednesday to learn more about medical innovations underway at HCA Healthcare’s first Innovation Hub. UCF Lake Nona Hospital was dubbed “the hospital of the future” when it opened in 2021, quickly becoming the site of groundbreaking medical innovation and technology in patient care.

Attendees experienced firsthand how artificial intelligence and medical technology are solving tomorrow's healthcare issues today for care team members at the bedside, in the emergency department, and in workforce management, ultimately enhancing patient care. UCF Lake Nona Hospital has the highest patient satisfaction scores among Central Florida's hospitals.

Brothers Jai and Avi Gupta, rising seniors at Seminole High School Sanford, shared their impressions of the hands-on experience. “It was great seeing all of these new innovations being applied in an actual healthcare setting and not just in theory,” Jai said. Avi added, “Seeing how these innovations directly impact the lives of healthcare workers and how the people working on them are using the nurses’ feedback is amazing. Their collaboration is making the technology that much better.”

HCA Healthcare is responsible for 43 million annual patient encounters each year. By utilizing this data and investing in digital and AI technologies, HCA Healthcare is driving meaningful change, improving patient outcomes and elevating the standard of care.

“Because of our size and our scale, and obviously our success and capabilities, we have the ability to make these kinds of investments and to think long-term,” said Dr. Michael Schlosser, senior vice president and chief transformation officer, Digital Transformation and Innovation, HCA Healthcare. “The Innovation Hub at UCF Lake Nona Hospital in Orlando is truly leading the way in revolutionizing delivery of care, across HCA Healthcare and the entire healthcare industry.”

“Their main purpose was to put me back together and get me out of the hospital and home to my family,” shared shark attack survivor Lis Foley. “I’m so thankful to each and every one of them for the part that they played.”

While vacationing with her family in Florida last June, Lis’s life changed in an instant when she was attacked by a shark. A group of off-duty nurses and physicians — also on vacation — rushed to help, using their training to stop the bleeding until EMS arrived.

In collaboration with local EMS, Lis was brought to HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, a Level II Trauma Center, for immediate, life-saving care. A comprehensive team of trauma and orthopedic physicians, nurses and caregivers worked together to stabilize Lis while providing compassionate care.

Through the scale and collaborative network of HCA Healthcare, Lis was seamlessly transferred to Chippenham Hospital, part of Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Hospitals and HCA Virginia Health System, to be closer to home. The Richmond-based hospital offers highly trained wound and reconstructive specialists equipped to treat the most traumatic injuries and help restore limb function. Lis underwent 18 complex surgeries, countless hours of care and incredible support from our expert care teams during her 44-day stay at the two HCA Healthcare facilities with the goal of getting Lis back to doing what she loves. She was finally able to return home on Aug. 6, 2024.

Today, Lis continues to recover with strength and determination. Nearly one year following her accident, she recently returned to HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital to reunite with doctors, nurses, colleagues and first responders as she shared her testimony at a Trauma Survivors Event.
