This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and HCA Florida Healthcare facilities across Florida went all out for the fight against breast cancer. There were Wear Pink commemorative days, fund-raising events, and the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk – the largest fund-raising event of all. These events gave our colleagues a chance to honor those who have won the fight and remember those who have left us. Most of all, our collective efforts helped raise awareness of the importance of screenings as well as prevention and treatment of this deadly disease that affects 1 out of 8 of our moms, daughters, sisters, wives and friends.

As we look back over the last 40 years, the number 40 is significant to breast cancer awareness. Cancer mortality is down more than 40% and 40 is the age when women should start having a mammogram. For the past four decades, HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues have played a significant role in their communities, highlighting awareness and raising money for research and support services.

If you haven't been screened for breast cancer, now is the time. To easily schedule your screening go to https://bit.ly/48QDEev.

As we close out October, we salute all who helped raise awareness. Thank you for all you do for your community and the cause!

We're reflecting on a great show of support this past weekend for American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer by our Greater Orlando HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues! Together in the fight against breast cancer walking alongside 50,000 community members for this year's event in Lake Eola Park. We were inspired to see all of our breast cancer survivors and their supporters out in full pink force to rally to help fund the future of breast cancer research and programs.

Across our broader HCA Healthcare network, caregivers perform approximately 1.5 million mammograms each year - an essential tool in the early detection of breast cancer. For women in the U.S., breast cancer is the most common cancer (after skin cancer) and the second-leading cause of death (after lung cancer). The earlier cancer is found, the better the chances for successful treatment.

Schedule your mammogram today by visiting our website - https://bit.ly/4nlqwS3

On Saturday, October 25, UCF Lake Nona Hospital proudly partnered with the Orlando Police Department for the Drug Enforcement Administration - DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Thank you to our community members who dropped off more than 50 pounds of unused and unwanted medication for safe and proper disposal, helping us on prescription drug misuse. Every pound collected is a step forward in the fight against opioid addiction.

In 2024, HCA Florida Healthcare joined local law enforcement at collection sites across the state to collect and properly dispose of more than 3,500 pounds of unused or expired medications as part of HCA Healthcare's Crush the Crisis initiative. In total, an estimated 21,000 pounds of medication, or an estimated 14.5 million doses were reclaimed.

High blood pressure often goes unnoticed, but it shouldn’t. It’s a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke and other serious health concerns.

Know the signs of a blood pressure medical emergency:
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
• Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
• Severe headaches
• Severe abdominal or back pain
• Shortness of breath
• Vision changes, such as blurred or double vision

If your blood pressure hits 180/120 mmHg or higher, seek emergency care immediately, especially if you experience any of these symptoms.

Knee pain is a common symptom that can be caused by anything from sports injuries to arthritis. You can usually treat hip pain at home with self-care measures. Physical therapy and knee braces can also help relief the pain. But if the pain persists or gets worse, it might be time to see an orthopedic doctor.

According to the CDC, the rate of total knee replacements has increased in both men and women aged 45 and older with more than 790,000 procedures. Following a relatively short period of recovery, patients usually return to a high level of activity.
