Saying less seems like the opposite of what we should do when encouraging language... However, the added pressure and expectation for the child to speak verbally leads to shut down, meltdowns, frustration, overwhelm, and decreased participation in activities. And that's no fun for anyone!
To encourage language, modeling is the key. Say the word or short phrase that goes best with the activity at hand instead of asking questions or prompting with, "say ___" or "can you say ____".
Use the same words and phrases when engaging in that activity. Anticipation of the word/phrase encourages language. For example, "ready, set, ...go". By using this phrase repeatedly, the child can anticipate the word "go" and may attempt to say it during play.
Having fun and engaging in play is the best way to connect and model language.
