Dr. Winters attended Brown University for undergrad, and in 1980 received an M.D. After graduation, Dr. Winters completed an internship in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, followed by a year of general surgery at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Winters' orthopaedic residency was at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, followed by an A.O. Fellowship in trauma in Hanover, West Germany. Additionally, Dr. Winters completed Fellowships in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard Medical School, where he also served as Assistant Team Physician for Harvard University's Department of Athletics.
