Arm rehab does not have to be costly. A little pvc, a boxing glove (to discriminate use of the uninvolved hand) and a little creativity...... voila......modified constraint induced movement therapy

Connecting the upper and lower body

Walking requires learning how to move the upper body on the lower body and vice versa. This requires leg and arm muscles to work together using the trunk as a “mediator”

Here are a few variations to engage the core while performing upper body and lower body movements

Knee Flexion (early stage)

Bending the knee is a critical leg movement that allows the foot to clear the ground when walking.

That being said, not being able to bend the knee is a common problem after damage to the brain and/or spinal cord and makes walking difficult.

The best position to start relearning how to bend the knee is with the hip flexed as this is part of a NORMAL muscle synergy. A normal muscle synergy is when groups of muscles work together. In this case the hip flexors and the knee flexors can work together. In other words they kind of help each other out.

Give these a try and let me know how it goes!

EARLY STAGE OF REHAB

A Gym Ball can be the perfect tool in the early early stage of rehab.

1. You can use it to support your legs to initiate movement.
2. It can be used to start getting some strength back in the trunk muscles. Which can be week after a prolonged hospitalization.
3. I gym ball is the perfect home for my favorite exercise, seated forward flexion. This is important to relearn sit to stand from a standard height chair.

Does your leg flop ok to the side when you are walking?

One reason this happen is due to tight/shortened muscles that rotate the leg outward and/or weakness that rotate the leg inward

Here are some of my favorite stretches.
