Let’s talk about vitamins. Everyone’s nutritional needs are different. Even when eating a full, nutritious diet, some people do not receive nutrients in the same way whether from malabsorption, timing, or other factors like stomach acid and enzymatic abnormalities.
With bariatric surgery, we will get a baseline of specific vitamins and minerals when you begin your journey and will routinely have follow-up labs to monitor your levels. We know changes to the GI system can alter the way your body receives nutrients including important vitamins and minerals, and that your diet will be changing as well.
This is why bariatric formulated supplements are important! If you are a bariatric patient who has not been using supplements, or even if you have been using non-bariatric vitamins, get your levels checked and work with an experienced bariatric provider who is familiar with the current research and guidance on bariatric supplementation.
