It’s hotter than a pepper sprout out there! 🥵

And while we all might be cranking up the AC, older adults need a little extra care to stay safe and comfortable this season.

Here’s a few summer tips for older loved ones:

💧 Keep drinks flowing — Hydration is key. Try lemon water, herbal iced tea, or fruit-infused water for a refreshing twist.

🌿 Stick to shade — Morning and evening are best for fresh air. Think porch chats, garden strolls, or birdwatching under a tree.

🍓 Eat the rainbow — Seasonal foods like berries, melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes are easy, colorful, and packed with nutrients.

🎶 Play their favorite music — It can lift spirits, stir memories, and create connection in an instant.

👂 Be present — Whether it’s a phone call, a visit, or simply sitting nearby, your time means more than you know.

Share this post to shine a light on summer safety for older adults. 🔃

“As a caregiver, you're always juggling three things: independence, safety, and the third we could describe as like joy or comfort.” — Adria Thompson

When you're making decisions on behalf of someone else, the stakes feel higher, and the guilt runs deeper. In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn and Adria unpack the emotional complexity of caregiving and introduce the idea of choosing a priority in the moment.
Whether your loved one is in the early or late stages of dementia, knowing whether to lead with independence, safety, or joy can guide your choices—and ease some of the pressure. 💚 Tune in wherever you get your podcasts. 🎧 https://apple.co/3RuALpz

After answering the call to caregiving, Betty June Harp is officially retiring at the vibrant age of 90. 🎉

She’s been the heart of so many meaningful moments with our Louisville team, and while we’ll miss seeing her smile each day, we’re celebrating all she’s given—and all that’s ahead.

Congratulations on your retirement, Betty June. You’re a legend, a light, and yes, finally a lady of leisure. 💜

With all our love,
Your Home Instead family

5 Signs Your Aging Loved One May Need Extra Support at Home

Changes in Personal Hygiene
You may notice they’re skipping baths, wearing the same clothes repeatedly, or neglecting grooming. This can be due to physical limitations, fear of falling in the shower, or even early signs of cognitive decline.

Unexplained Weight Loss
If your loved one is losing weight without trying, it might be because they’re forgetting to eat, having trouble cooking, or experiencing a loss of appetite related to medications or underlying health issues.

Household Disorganization
Stacks of unopened mail, cluttered spaces, expired food, or unpaid bills can signal difficulty keeping up with daily tasks. This is often due to memory challenges, fatigue, or depression.

Memory Lapses
Forgetting names, appointments, or whether they’ve taken medication isn’t just a part of normal aging. Frequent forgetfulness can be a red flag for conditions like dementia or mild cognitive impairment.

Mobility Issues
If they’re moving slower, using furniture for balance, or have experienced recent falls, these are clear indicators that mobility is becoming a concern — and safety could be at risk.

When “let’s talk” feels like too much, start small.
In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn sits down with Amy Friesen, eldercare expert and author of Breadcrumbs, to explore why families avoid planning conversations—and how to gently start them.

Amy shares why it's rarely a one-time talk, how professionals can help ease tension, and why sometimes the message lands better when it doesn’t come from you.

Helping your child connect with a grandparent who has dementia can be meaningful and comforting. Here are three simple ways to guide their conversations with love and patience.

1. Keep it Simple and Positive
Encourage your child to use short, clear sentences and a cheerful tone. Let them know it’s okay to repeat things or speak slowly. What matters most is being kind and patient.

2. Focus on Feelings, Not Facts
Explain that their grandparent might not remember names or events, but they can still feel emotions. A smile, a gentle voice, and loving attention can go a long way.

3. Use Photos or Shared Activities
Looking at family photos, listening to music, or doing simple crafts can help spark memories and make conversations feel more natural and enjoyable.

What if the best medicine for aging well... is friendship? 💚

David Troxel shares how a Home Instead Care Pro became a lifeline for his dad—not just helping around the house, but watching golf, cooking together, and bringing joy back into the day.

Because the truth is, the brain loves company. And sometimes, a little companionship can change everything.

When Thao walks into the room, a veteran with advanced Parkinson’s — mostly nonverbal — lights up and says, “There’s my angel.”
Thao Nguyen, a Care Pro with Home Instead, doesn’t just show up. She brings music. She brings home-cooked Vietnamese meals. She brings peace of mind.

Originally from Vietnam, Thao cared for her grandmother and extended family from a young age. That lifelong devotion to elders followed her to the U.S., where a neighbor introduced her to caregiving.

One family loved her cooking so much, they stocked their pantry just so Thao could prepare her signature dishes. Another client requested her by name each week, just to hear her music in the hall.

“I treat them like my own parents,” Thao says. “I love them so much.”

Thank you, Thao, for reminding us that exceptional caregiving isn’t just noticed.

Let this story be a reminder: great care creates connection that lasts.
