Depression is treatable during pregnancy and postpartum. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and mothers with pre-existing depression prior to or during pregnancy are more likely to experience postpartum depression. Pregnancy and postpartum depression are treatable, and risk can also be mitigated. Symptoms generally include sadness, trouble concentrating, difficulty finding joy in activities once enjoyed, and difficulty bonding with the baby.

Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) disorders include a range of disorders and symptoms, including but not limited to depression, anxiety and psychosis. These disorders and symptoms can occur during pregnancy and/or the postpartum period (together often referred to as the perinatal period).

When left untreated these disorders can cause devastating consequences for the individual, the baby, their family and society.

These illnesses can be caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social stressors, such as lack of support, a family history, or a previous experience with these disorders.

Perinatal anxiety and depression are the most common complications of childbirth, impacting up to 1 in 5. , yet they are not universally screened for, nor treated.

The good news is that risk for both depression and anxiety can be reduced and sometimes prevented, and with treatment women can recover.

Did you know, maternal mental health disorders, like postpartum depression, are more common than breast cancer or gestational diabetes?

The most common maternal mental health disorders are anxiety followed by depression. These disorders can be mild or so severe they become debilitating.

A study conducted during the pandemic shows that rates of clinically significant anxiety and depression symptoms have more than doubled - rising to 72% and 41% respectively - among pregnant and postpartum women.

All women are at risk though disparities are stark. Women of color and low-income mothers are faced with overwhelming stressors and, not surprisingly, are several times more likely to experience maternal anxiety or depression., AND are less likely to receive treatment.

Maternal Mental Health Disorders onset during pregnancy, prior to pregnancy or in the postpartum period. When a mother isn’t properly supported and treated symptoms can persist for years impacting her own health and well-being and potentially her baby’s.

Pregnancy can be a time of joy β€” and stress. Research suggests that about 1 in 7 pregnant women experience depression during pregnancy. Rates might be higher in low and middle-income countries. Depression, a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest, is the most common mood disorder in the general population. The condition occurs twice as often in women as in men, and the initial onset of depression peaks during a woman's reproductive years.
