Today was an absolute dream ✨ I had the honor of meeting Dave Asprey] who has been such an influential voice throughout my pursuit of functional medicine research and practice. ⁣

He was one of the first voices I listened to and trusted in this health + wellness space, and has since introduced me to so many other leading health practitioners and researchers through his podcasts and books ⁣

We love ‘s take on disease.

No patient with migraines is the same.
No patient with IBS is the same.
No patient with diabetes is the same.
No patient with hypothyroidism is the same.

A diagnosis is only part of the puzzle. 🧩 Diagnoses are a label to put on a name of symptoms and lab values.

Once you have a diagnosis, that doesn’t really tell us WHY those are happening.

For example, with depression…
-Are there vital nutrient deficiencies like amino acids and fatty acids?
-Is there gut dysbiosis
-Is there low magnesium and vitamin D?
-Is there a heavy metal toxicity?

A diagnosis is only part of the puzzle.

That’s where Functional Medicine comes in, to get to the root cause of your symptoms.

Fresh new week, fresh new meal prep recipe! ⁣

I whipped up chickpea cauliflower coconut curry 🍛 and it is the quickest (and one of the tastiest) meals I’ve prepped to date! I literally put “0” minutes on the instant pot, and it was done as soon as that 🙌 Full disclosure, my version was not as pretty as her picture, but I know it was every bit as delicious!!⁣

All of her recipes I have tried have been family hits, and you can easily pack in alllll the veggies to any recipe to help meet your 7-9 servings per day 🥦🍠🥬🍲🫑⁣

It’s all about balance!

It’s not about shaming yourself and being completely restrictive. We’re all about the 80/20 rule at Ikaria.

Making the choice to live a healthy lifestyle then allows you the freedom to incorporate treats without guilt.

S T R E S S is the underlying factor to 90% of all chronic disease.

Almost everything that makes us sick is preceded by stress.

Here are a few ways stress exacerbates everything from hormone imbalances to poor digestion:
-Excess production of cortisol leading to hormonal imbalances
-Th1 + 2 imbalances leading to weakened immune system
- Weakens intentional wall junctions leading to intestinal permeability

Stress is unavoidable, but how we cope + respond to stress has a greater influence on our overall health than the stress itself.

SO in order to combat our stressors we need to prioritize practices that encourage balance + calm the nervous system. When we can calm our minds, our minds help calm the body. ✌️

Here are some of our favorite suggestions to combat stress:
- Dinner with friends or social outings you enjoy 👯‍♀️
- 20 minute naps 💤
- Playing with your kids or walking the dog 🤸🏻‍♀️🐶
- Getting outside 🌳☀️🌸
-5 deep breaths

It’s not all in your head.

You’ve gone to the doctor and been told everything is “normal”, but you still aren’t feeling well? 🤒

There’s a huge difference between conventional “normal” and functional medicine’s optimal lab values.

For example, a “normal” TSH is between 0.45-4.5 in conventional medicine.
That is a wide range...

Whereas in functional medicine, the science shows us that optimal TSH level are between 1-2.5. A much smaller range.

That’s why in functional medicine, we take a look at the patient, their symptoms, ALONG with lab values. None of these should be considered apart from the other.

Having a TSH of 4.4 is technically “normal” but you’re on the high end of normal! Being passed off as normal when your symptoms say otherwise is like saying a water pot that is simmering isn’t boiling.

We encourage all our patients to make sure they get copies of their lab values even if they are told everything is normal.

Let’s do self care…but safe 🤗

It’s estimated that a woman leaves her house in the morning with over 400 toxic chemicals on her body! 💄Add that exposure up over 30, 50, 70 years and you’ve got some major chemical disruption.

Our skin is our largest organ and what we put on it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Our hormones help to regulate so many of our bodily functions
