Florida leads the nation in drownings, with Central Florida recording the highest rates in the state. Just in 2025, 73 people have fatally drowned in Florida -- 49 of these individuals being children under the age of 4.

To confront these drownings statewide, team members from The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families and Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children came together with other local organizations to discuss and create a plan to confront drownings statewide.

Together, we are working to combat drownings in Florida with an Orange County Drowning Prevention Action Plan -- because even one life lost is one too many. 💧

July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month -- a time dedicated to raising awareness about cleft and craniofacial conditions and promoting early diagnosis and treatment. 🧡

The Orlando Health Children’s Neuroscience Institute Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery team is the first in Central Florida and one of the first in all of Florida to utilize an innovative presurgical molding method for children with cleft lip known as PLANA, which stands for presurgical lip, alveolus and nose approximation.

Baby Naima began PLANA treatment at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children at the end of November 2024, and she is doing phenomenally well. In just three weeks, a remarkable difference was seen within her nasal cartilage and narrowing of her cleft. “She is feeding much better, now that her nose is more open,” says her family. “She can even close her mouth and breathe through her nose while she is sleeping, which she couldn’t do before,” Dad adds. ✨
