Early Steps of Central Florida Early intervention serving children 0 - 36 months who have or who are at risk of developmental delays

The Developmental Center for Infants & Children/Early Steps is an early intervention program that sees children from birth to age three who have or who are at risk for any kind of developmental delay or disability. Through the program, families learn about their children's development, how they might help them overcome delays and how they can obtain appropriate community services and support. Our

goal is to provide culturally appropriate support to help families strengthen their children's intellectual, physical, emotional, social and sensory abilities.

Best Toys for Toddlers!

By the time Baby turns one year old, they're crawling, possibly walking, and even starting to say words. These skills all develop with the help of playtime.

There are two types of toys:
🔹 Close-ended: There is a beginning and end to playing with this toy.
🔹 Open-ended: This toy can be played with in different ways with no definite end.

Check out the full list of toys for toddlers that can help with sensory, motor, and communication skills: https://pathways.org/toys-for-toddlers

From surprise bills to uncovered therapies, the cost of care after the NICU can feel never-ending — and overwhelming. But you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Join us tomorrow (Tuesday, July 16 at 1 PM EST) for our next NICU Alumni Parent Group — a free, virtual gathering for families navigating life after the NICU.

This month, we’re welcoming Abby Zachritz (.abby) — a family advocacy expert who helps parents uncover grants, foundations, and financial programs that are actually accessible.

✨ In this session, you’ll learn:
✔️ How to find funding sources that fit your family
✔️ What documents and info you need to apply
✔️ Where to start when everything feels out of reach
✔️ That asking for help is not only okay — it’s powerful

💙 Whether you’re months or years past the NICU, this is your reminder: the system may be confusing, but support does exist — and you deserve it.

📝 Comment SUPPORT GROUP and we’ll DM you the registration link.

We hope to see you there.

We have some exciting virtual events happening this July!

The Parent Empowerment Program will be hosting their online Snapshots and Parent Panels within the next week! There is still plenty of time to register for these events!

The Snapshots Panels will focus on what it is like to hear differently from personal experiences. Please join us for a discussion with adults who are deaf and hard of hearing as they share snapshots of their life experiences. These will take place on July 14th at 6:30pm and July 18th at 12:00pm (EDT). You can sign up for 1 or both of them.

The Parent Panels offer a safe community for people of a child/grandchild with a hearing difference. These panels are live online Q&As with other parents who have a child with a hearing difference. You are not alone! These panels will take place on July 15th at 7:30pm and July 16th at 12:00pm (EDT). You can sign up for 1 or both of them.

These events are FREE and open to all Florida residents with children ages birth-6 years old, who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Interpreters will be provided during the panels.

Please follow this link to the Parent Empowerment Program website to register for the events: https://www.flehdipep.org/events/panels

You can register for all 1-4 of these events.

You don't want to miss it! Please share these online Panels with any family, neighbors, friends, co-workers or anyone else that might be interested. Please message us with any questions or concerns. You can register until the day of the event. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom!

Camp ALEC is streaming on Disney Plus. It is about an overnight camp for children who are non speaking and use devices to communicate.

Last night, ABC11 featured Dr. Karen Erickson, Director of UNC’s Center for Literacy and Disability Studies, in a compelling segment that highlights the university’s leadership in inclusive education and communication.

Dr. Erickson’s work—featured alongside Camp ALEC and a new Disney documentary—underscores UNC’s commitment to groundbreaking research and advocacy for children who communicate in nontraditional ways.

We’re proud to see UNC faculty recognized for driving meaningful change on a national stage.
