Being an addiction counselor for years, I have seen the affects of alcohol and drugs on individuals as well as their families.

It can be devastating.

It can destroy families.

It separates people.

We are now in a time of technology that we can get ahold or reach someone in an instant.

Our computers, Iphones, tablets make us feel like we are connected to others, but it is a lie.

Loneliness is at an all time high. Studies show that it is an epidemic!
LONELINESS!

NOT connection!

How can we be lonely if we are connected to others all the time?
It is a false sense of connection.

Actually it is the opposite of connection. It is disconnect…a disconnect from others.

Disconnected from ourselves.

People sitting with others at the dinner table, looking at their phones. Not giving others their full attention, not interacting, not having a conversation with each other. Both people loose out. So what you do affects others.

And this is not just the younger generations.

Next time you are in a restaurant, watch older couples doing it. Totally disengaged with each other.

Why is it that what we are reading or scrolling mindlessly is more important than the individual sitting in front of you?

Ask yourself that! Why?

Here is a great to a quiz: https://virtual-addiction.com/smartphone-compulsion-test/

I am making a conscious effort to NOT be on my phone when I am with family and friends. If I am… I am taking pictures!

I will never be here, in this moment again so I don’t want to miss a thing. I want to create memories and be fully present to my sons and grand/great grandchildren. I want them to remember that I was here for them AND that I was present and paid attention to them.

That they are important!

That I am interested in them personally AND so they get to know me.

Here is a great article that came out yesterday that explains why our cell phones and technology are so addicting. They have purposely created them to get us addicted to them with a false sense of connection.

https://www.helpguide.org/articles/addictions/smartphone-addiction.htm

What a scam. This is no different than the alcohol and cigarette commercials back in the day.

Makes me very concerned for our children and grandchildren.
Try taking a 24 hour sabbatical from your phone and see what you notice.

AND ...it’s like I would tell any alcoholic or drug addict, if you don’t have a problem with it, then it won’t be a problem to put it down for a day.

Do it on a weekend when work is not a reason.
(and watch the excuses that come up to justify not putting it down!)

Let me know how it goes!

If it doesn’t go well…

Step One: I am powerless over my cell phone and my life has become unmanageable.

AND for me…. Who would want to miss this moment!

"I started spending so much time with people in AA and avoiding people who weren't alcoholics, who AA members call normies"

Where you find support matters. We wholeheartedly promote diversity in programs, and in recovery coaches.

"Researchers found that anxiety surrounding body image and weight gain can incite unhealthy eating attitudes linked to drunkorexia."

Well here is a new term for us! How often have you seen these two things coincide?

"Mommy drinking allows mothers to bond over shared experiences of motherhood and find support in a relaxed setting."

A big round of applause for highlighting these many reasons for acceptability and mostly for this way to move forward:
"Perhaps shifting our focus towards reducing barriers and offering mothers additional support could potentially empower them and enhance their ability to navigate their responsibilities more effectively rather than turning to alcohol for support and belonging."

"In response to last week's announcement of a bipartisan amendment to the Farm Bill seeking to ban intoxicating h**p products from the market, the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) sent a message to Congress — prohibition isn't the answer."

A harm reduction focus in education would be most effective!

"To start, Sharifzadeh said it's important to tease apart the concepts of wellness and well-being, and to consider that employee wellness goes way beyond meditation or yoga programs some may associate with them."

Given the stats, we would argue that sobriety support and programs that qualify you as a 'recovery ready workplace' will give the highest ROI.
