My therapeutic philosophy stems from my heartfelt belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to process and work through life’s challenges in an empathic, understanding, and non-judgmental environment. It is my goal to create this type of compassion
ate space for you. I am committed to helping you reach your full potential and to see you succeed. During sessions, I enjoy collaborating with each adult or adolescent client to help them achieve their personal goals. My concentrated specialties are in the areas of sexual trauma (both adult sexual violence and childhood molestation), gender-related issues (including transgender transition), and relationship issues (including domestic violence and sexual functioning). I have worked extensively with a variety of mental health diagnoses and concerns; some of which include Depression, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Gender Dysphoria, Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder, S*xual Dysfunction, Grief and Loss, Self-Esteem, Personal Growth and Transition, Women's Issues, Family of Origin Concerns, and Boundary Creation/Maintenance. My work focuses on assisting those who are struggling to acknowledge, control, or express their emotions in a healthy and appropriate way. Throughout the therapeutic process, I am committed to providing confidential, knowledgeable, and supportive therapy. My approach is personalized, integrative, and encouraging. I am certified in both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and S*x Therapy, although I utilize a number of clinical approaches. Some of these approaches include Humanistic, Psychodynamic, Interpersonal Process, Cognitive-Behavioral, Dialectical Behavioral, Existentialism, Exposure Therapy, Solution-Focused, Family Systems, and Mindfulness. My comprehensive treatment plans and techniques are adjusted based on your individual needs and goals. I have worked in the field of counseling since 2007. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida (Lic. ), a Nationally Certified Counselor (Cert. #323924), and have received extensive specialized training in sexual and domestic violence. I am a Certified EMDR Therapist, as well as a Florida-Certified S*x Therapist. I hold a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.

Not all Certifications are created equal in the counseling world. Some can be accomplished in a long weekend, while others take years. This one falls into the latter category, and is one of which I am very proud.

ISST-D (the International Society For The Study Of Trauma And Dissociation) is the unmistakable leader in this field, and I am stoked to share that I am officially recognized by their organization as an Advanced Specialist in Complex PTSD and Dissociation.

It’s called

Oh, you’re drowning? Focus on the positive in the situation.

Simone Biles came on the TV screen.

My husband commented to our girls - “She’s the world’s greatest gymnast”.

I added, “and she’s really brave”.

My 5yo looked at me and asked, “why?”

So I told her.

“Because the American gymnasts used to have a team doctor, who turned out to be a tricky person. He was touching the girls’ private parts. For the girls it was so scary to tell anyone. They didn’t know if anyone would believe them and they were scared they’d lose their spot on the team.

But Simone Biles was one of the girls who spoke up and said what had been happening, and now that tricky doctor is in jail”.

I could see she was still listening, so I added,
“And now, she’s got her own Gymnastics centre, where they make sure the kids are all safe, where their parents can easily watch over them, and they are spoken to kindly instead of being yelled at, which is what lots of coaches do, but it’s not ok”.

My daughter didn’t respond.

She got out of her chair, and watched every moment of Simone Biles’ routine.

⬆️ Teachable moments about body safety and children’s rights are everywhere.

Take them.

** Editing to add: please know that this post was never intended as a history lesson. I’ve written word for word what I said to my 5yo - I did my best to simplify the story for her, and I represented that here.

Simone Biles was not the first athlete to speak out, she spoke out later - I don’t think this makes her less brave. People go through their own journeys and speak up in their own time. She has kept showing up. She has pressed for change. All of this is brave beyond measure.

If you haven’t heard the story, or want more information, please watch the documentary Athlete A. Or just Google it. You can find all the details just about everywhere.

The response to this post has been overwhelming.

I hope the key point was clear: Seize the moments to talk to your kids. Be open. There are age-appropriate ways to talk about everything. They are ready for more than you think.
