Florida College of Emergency Physicians Statement on the Importance of Vaccines:

Vaccines Save Lives

As emergency physicians, we are on the front lines of healthcare—serving as the safety net for every community in Florida. Every day, we see the devastating impact of preventable infectious diseases in our emergency departments. Illnesses like measles, mumps, and polio are not relics of the past—they are real threats that can cause severe illness, lifelong complications, and death, especially in children and vulnerable adults.

Vaccines are one of the most important and effective tools in modern medicine. They have saved millions of lives, reduced the burden of disease, and helped eliminate or control many of the most dangerous infections in history. The safety and efficacy of routine childhood vaccines are supported by an overwhelming body of scientific evidence and the consensus of every major medical and public health organization.

The Florida College of Emergency Physicians (FCEP) represents the voice of more than 2,400 emergency medicine physicians across the state. For over 50 years, FCEP has been committed to serving Florida communities on the front lines of the healthcare system—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our members care for patients in their most critical moments, and we know firsthand how vital vaccines are in preventing illness, protecting public health, and saving lives.

At FCEP, we base our care—and our advocacy—on science, data, and proven medical evidence. We strongly support the use of vaccines to protect individuals, families, and communities.
Vaccines are safe. Vaccines are effective. Vaccines save lives.

Empowering EMS Clinicians with Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS)
- with Jonathan Epstein and Julie Bacon

Get introduced to the Red Cross Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) program (developed in collaboration with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses), designed to address critical gaps in neonatal resuscitation training across diverse healthcare settings. NALS, with a focus on both in- and out-of-hospital care, equips clinicians with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to newborn emergencies—from the moment of birth through post-resuscitation care.

Neonatal care is an emerging challenge in the United States due to the growth of maternity care deserts in the United States. Over 35% of U.S. counties now have limited or no access to maternity care, affecting more than 2.3 million women and 150,000 births annually. These areas lack birthing hospitals, obstetric providers and prenatal care resources, leading to increased rates of preterm births, inadequate prenatal care and higher neonatal morbidity and mortality. These systemic gaps are driving a 22% increase in out-of-hospital births, placing greater responsibility on EMS providers to deliver lifesaving care in unpredictable environments.

With a focus on the “Golden Minute” after birth, NALS empowers EMS professionals to make rapid, informed decisions that can significantly improve neonatal outcomes. This presentation is both a call to action and a practical guide for EMS teams seeking to enhance their readiness in the face of a growing maternal health crisis.
