Many people experience pain, weakness, or instability because certain muscles are not activating the way they should.

In many cases, the issue is not simply the muscle itself, but the communication between the nervous system and the muscle.

Every muscle has specific locations called motor points, where nerves connect to muscle fibers and send the signal that tells the muscle to contract. When this connection becomes disrupted, the muscle may struggle to activate properly, which can affect strength, movement, and stability.

Motor point therapy focuses on restoring this nerve-muscle communication. By stimulating these sites with acupuncture or dry needling, it is possible to help the nervous system reconnect with the muscle and improve its ability to function.

Understanding how this process works can provide valuable insight into why certain injuries, chronic pain conditions, or muscle weaknesses persist, and how targeted treatment can help restore proper function.

One of the most fascinating things about the human body is that it is always trying to protect you.

When an injury happens, or when a movement becomes painful, the nervous system often responds by changing how certain muscles activate.

Sometimes it reduces the activity of a muscle that feels unsafe to use.
Other muscles step in to compensate.

At first, this is a protective strategy.

But over time, these compensation patterns can lead to:

• Persistent pain
• Muscle fatigue
• Stiffness
• Loss of strength or stability

What many people interpret as “a weak muscle” is often the result of a muscle that the nervous system has simply stopped trusting to work normally.

Part of the recovery process is helping the body restore that trust in movement again.

When the nervous system reconnects with those muscles, people often notice something surprising:

Movement begins to feel easier, more stable, and more natural.

Not because the body was broken.
But because it finally regained the coordination it had lost.

Have you ever noticed your body moving differently after an injury?

Why Muscles Stop Working Properly

Many people assume pain always comes from inflammation or injury.

But in many cases, the real problem is that a muscle has stopped activating properly.

Muscles rely on signals from the nervous system to contract and function correctly. When that communication becomes disrupted, the muscle can become weak or inhibited. Other muscles then begin to compensate, which often leads to pain, stiffness, and movement problems.

This is something I evaluate carefully during an assessment.

By identifying the muscles that are not activating properly, treatment can focus on restoring that connection so the body can move and function the way it was designed to.

Hello and welcome.

My name is Dr. Esteban Ortega, DACM, AP, and I’m the founder of Horizon Integrative Medicine in Orlando, Florida.

My work focuses on helping patients restore their health and function through acupuncture and integrative medicine. Many of the people I work with are dealing with chronic pain, nerve conditions, muscle weakness, or health challenges that have not improved with traditional treatments alone.

A key part of my approach focuses on restoring proper muscle activation through motor point therapy, a specialized technique that helps the nervous system reconnect with muscles that are not functioning properly. I also incorporate acupuncture and dry needling as part of an integrative treatment strategy to support healing and recovery.

Through a detailed assessment and targeted treatment approach, my goal is to help patients restore balance in the body so they can move better, feel stronger, and return to the activities they enjoy.

On this page, I’ll be sharing insights about acupuncture, patient success stories, and some of the principles I use when helping people recover and live pain-free.

Neck and upper back tension often comes from tight trigger points in the traps and rhomboids. Targeted needling helps the muscle release, improves circulation, and supports a healthier movement pattern.

The light redness around the needles is a normal histamine response. It’s a sign that the body is waking up the area and beginning the healing process.

Neck and trap tension can build up from stress, posture, or old injuries. Electroacupuncture gives these muscles a gentle reset by activating the motor points and improving circulation. Patients usually feel a deep release and lighter movement right after treatment.

If chronic tension keeps coming back, this technique can help your body finally relax.

Shoulder pain often comes from the muscles that support the shoulder, not the joint itself. Tight pecs, deltoid attachments, and the rotator cuff can pull everything out of balance.
Cupping opens the tissue, restores blood flow, and gives those muscles room to move again. This is one of the fastest ways we help patients calm pain and get their mobility back.

Most people think Gua Sha is just “scraping.” It’s not. You’re watching tight, inflamed tissue open up so this patient can finally move without pain. When the fascia releases, the whole nervous system calms down.

If you’ve ever had that stiff, burning spot in your back that never goes away… this is why.

🌿 This isn’t your average acupuncture.
When I treat patients, I go beyond just placing needles. I use muscle testing, motor point work, and gentle electro-stimulation to “wake up” weak or inactive muscles.

The goal? To restore movement, build strength, and help the body finally find lasting relief. It’s not about covering symptoms — it’s about giving the body what it needs to function again. 💪
