I’ve tried a lot of times to retire Tobey, and every time I failed.

Truth is, I still needed him. He’s been my rock through everything. Through cancer. Through bringing home my son. Through the divorce. Through every move and every place I didn’t know how I was going to handle. He’s always been there. Always steady. Always showing up for me no matter what.

Lately something’s been off. Car rides have been getting harder for him. The nonstop panting, the stress. And today… he wouldn’t even get in the car. He’s never done that before.

That was him telling me.

As much as it hurts, I hear him. He’s done enough. More than enough.

So today is it. No more work for Tobey.

He’s staying home. He’s going to run, play, be spoiled, and just live his life without having to carry me anymore.

He’s given me everything. It’s time I give that back to him.

I have not talked much lately about service dog training or pricing, and I get asked this all the time so here is some clarity.

Training a fully task trained service dog for a civilian client is very different from basic obedience or even advanced pet training. You are not just paying for commands, you are investing in reliability, public access behavior, and in many cases life impacting tasks like medical alerting.

Medical alert work especially is not something that can be rushed or guaranteed on a fixed timeline. It requires the right dog, the right handler, and a lot of consistency. Some dogs naturally develop strong alert behaviors, others require extensive shaping, and not every dog is suited for it.

For a fully trained service dog with public access and task work, pricing typically reflects:
Time invested often 12 to 24 months
Daily training, socialization, and exposure
Task training specific to your needs
Handler transfer and ongoing support

For civilian clients, a fully trained service dog typically falls in the range of 15000 to 30000 depending on the dog, the tasks required, and the level of training involved.

Medical alert training is an additional investment, typically ranging from 5000 to 15000 on top of that depending on complexity, reliability goals, and how the dog responds to the work.

I am always transparent about what I can and cannot promise. The goal is not just to give you a dog, but to build a working partner that actually improves your day to day life.

If you are serious about a service dog and want to understand what that looks like for your specific situation, reach out and we can talk through your needs.

No shortcuts. No unrealistic guarantees. Just real training and real results.

Did a talk at the Veterans Museum today. What stood out wasn’t the talk, it was the drive there. Because there was a time I would’ve tried to turn around ten times. Anxiety, doubt, all of it. Today I didn’t. I stayed with it, walked in, felt grounded and just spoke. It wasn’t about being perfect, it was about not running.

I was told it went great. One Vietnam veteran told me I was their hero, and that hit me hard. I got asked to speak at two more locations. There was a standing ovation, and you could feel it in the room. I saw tears in people’s eyes, and no one was on their phones.

What an honor that was. Vietnam vets, Korean War vets. Those are the real heroes. Ormond Strong Tim Forrester Debbie Kruck Forrester Jill Dempsey

TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND POP-SMOKE K-9 FOR VETERANS TO HOST BLESSING OF THE PETS ON SUNDAY, APRIL 12

A congenial Blessing of the Pets will be conducted in the Pavillion on the grounds of Trinity Presbyterian Church, 156 Florida Park Drive North, on Sunday, April 12th, beginning at 2:00 PM. This non-sectarian ceremony acknowledges the important role pets play in their owners’ lives, especially for those living with medical or emotional challenges. The Reverend Joseph Albright will officiate.

The event is presented by the church’s Service and Outreach Committee in conjunction with Pop-Smoke K-9 for Veterans, a not-for-profit organization that selects, trains and matches service dogs for veterans struggling with PTSD (Post Traumatic Brain Disorder), TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries) and MST (Military Sexual Trauma). There is no cost to the veterans.

The general public is invited to bring any variety of furry, feathered, or scaly animal friends for a blessing. For the safety of all attendees, please ensure all pets are kept on leashes, in crates, or in cages.

A memorial basket will be available for those who wish to include the names of pets that have passed for a blessing in their memory.

The event is free and there is plenty of parking.

For any questions or additional information, call 386-445-4757.
