The total lunar eclipse in Virgo is coming the night of Thursday, March 13, reaching totality at Friday, March 14 at 2:54 a.m. ET.
Lunar eclipses take place when the sun, Earth and moon line up, and the Earth's shadow (or umbra) covers the moon. There are three types of lunar eclipses: Total, partial, and penumbral.
This coming eclipse is a total eclipse, which comes with a stunning visual effect. The Earth's umbra will cast a reddish hue on the moon, hence the nickname "Blood Moon.”
The total lunar eclipse will be visible across the western hemisphere, including nearly all of North America and western South America. Western Europe and Africa, as well as parts of Asia and Australia, will also see some of the effects, per Time and Date.
Another total lunar eclipse will occur on Sept. 7 and will be visible across Europe, Africa and Asia.
