Sharing a blog post I find particularly relevant and poignant from my teacher, colleague, and friend, Terry Coburn, who
Lives in Freeport, ME:
“These past few weeks, we’ve been moving through the Metal Element — the part of the cycle that teaches us to refine, to see clearly, and to let go of what no longer fits. As we cross into early November, that energy begins to shift from sharpening to softening — from cutting away to adapting.
This is the essence of late autumn and the energy of Samhain: the in-between time. The light fades, the air stills, and everything in nature reorganizes below the surface. We’re invited to do the same — to adjust, to move slower, and to listen for what’s next.
I’ve been reminded of this lesson in my own body lately. In dealing with a recent volleyball-related hamstring injury, my movement has had to become more intentional — every cue, every step, every instruction pared down to its essentials. It’s been humbling and clarifying, a real-time study in the Metal Element’s gifts: precision, awareness, and the courage to pause.
The practices this upcoming week will carry that same energy of adaptation — movements that build strength through flexibility and awareness. In yoga and strength work alike, rotational patterns improve mobility, balance, and core stability. They remind us that release doesn’t always mean letting go completely; sometimes it’s simply about learning to move differently within what’s already here.” — Terry Coburn
