Even with the best conditions, the Matterhorn is one of the most technically challenging climb to achieve.
It snowed a ton two days before we were supposed to climb. Enough that we were worried we may not get to even attempt it.
We trekked to the Hornlihutte, the starting point for all hopeful climbers. We met with our guides, prepped our bags for morning and attempted sleep.
4am, all 22 guided groups ate breakfast mentally preparing for what’s to come. 4:20, game time.
5 hour constant grind up 4000’ of elevation gain through more snow and ice than our guide had experienced. We made it! But that was only the halfway point.
4.5 more hours slow and steady down the mountain, trying not to slide. Trust in your guide is a must.
Sitting down on the bench safely at the hut, a wave of emotions, from pride to relief, tears ran. Extremely grateful and exhausted.
A mountain I’ve loved since the first time I rode the Matterhorn at Disneyland.
A memory that will last a lifetime.
