When Deborah was first admitted to Orono Commons, she was told by a doctor that she would never walk again due to a spinal cord tumor that had caused significant loss of function in both of her legs. Through skilled rehabilitation, Debbie progressed from using a sit-to-stand lift, to a slide board, to transferring with a walker, walking, and eventually completing most of her self-care independently.

Now, Debbie has made the journey back home to Canada at a level she was once told she could never reach. She has surpassed all expectations through her incredible motivation and positivity. Whenever another patient needed extra support, Debbie was the first to pull them aside and become their coach—helping them face their challenges with grace and optimism. Her story shows just how powerful a positive attitude can be, even in the darkest situations.

When Mr. Kelley first arrived at our facility, he had little to no activation in his legs—his left side more affected than his right—due to a recent diagnosis of Bruns-Garland Syndrome, a rare form of diabetic amyotrophy that causes progressive weakness. He required assistance from two staff members just to get out of bed.

As of today, 6/26, after nearly 100 days with us here at Orono, Mr. Kelley is finally discharging home with his wife. Despite significant medical setbacks, he consistently rose to the occasion and met each challenge with determination.

A retired basketball coach, Mike thrived on having a structured workout plan. He approached each day asking what was “on the docket” and always wanted to know his weekly game plan. His wife, Cindy, was instrumental in his progress—supporting his therapy every step of the way and helping carry over the day’s lessons. She showed up every single day, cheering him on and even joining in exercise groups herself.

We are going to miss Mr. Kelley dearly—especially our therapy team, who have grown incredibly close to the entire Kelley family. It has been a true privilege to be part of his recovery journey.

🍦🎶 Ice Cream Truck Pop-Up! 🎶🍦
Who needs a real ice cream truck when you have creativity, a flatbed cart, and the best business office manager ever? Travis brought the ice cream truck to us—complete with music, sweet treats, and plenty of smiles!
With the help of our awesome volunteer Taylor, they rolled through the halls delivering cold goodies to residents and staff, spreading joy at every turn.
On a hot day like this, nothing hits the spot like an ice cream visit—especially one filled with laughter, music, and happy “customers.”🍨☀️🚚

We’ve been celebrating our amazing fathers all month long! Last Friday, we kicked things off with a special Father’s Day BBQ in the courtyard with family. It was the perfect day for enjoying lunch outdoors , great weather, good food, and even better company! ☀️ After the BBQ, we had a blast playing our own version of the Plinko game! Instead of winning money like the real game, each number came with a fun or silly challenge and our residents loved it! Then on Sunday, we kept the fun going with Dads, Donuts, and Drafts (the root beer kind, of course! 😉). Each of our dads received a personalized hat as a gift, a small way to say thank you for the big role they play every day. 👔🎉

A Rockin’ Treat for Our Residents! 🎸🎤
As one of our special May events—and a heartfelt bonus gift to our amazing mothers—we brought the King of Rock and Roll right to Orono Commons! 👑🎶
We were thrilled to welcome Elvis impersonator Don Boudreau, who serenaded our residents with classic hits, signature dance moves, and that unforgettable Elvis charm. It was a full house in the dining room, with everyone smiling, singing along, and reminiscing.
To top it off, Don made the experience even more special by handing out scarves and photos—just like the real Elvis used to do! 🧣

National Skilled Nursing Care Week: Tapestry of Life
Orono Commons’ Got Talent! 🎤🎭💃
We may be closing out the week, but the fun is far from over! Orono Commons wrapped up National Skilled Nursing Care Week with an unforgettable talent show, and let’s just say—we were not prepared for the level of talent we witnessed (in the best way possible)!
We had five fantastic performances:
🎤 Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance, courtesy of our Business Office Manager, Travis Ward!
🎶 Our new Recreation Assistant, Miranda wowed us with a beautiful ukulele performance.
🌞 ResCare residents sang “You Are My Sunshine” with creative props, led by Carmen Evans.
🌺 Staff from the Philippines performed a graceful traditional dance with dancers holding garlands of flowers.
🤸‍♀️ The Rehab Team closed the show with a high-energy acrobatic routine that had the crowd cheering!
The room was filled with laughter, applause, and joyful energy. Residents and staff had a blast and gave glowing feedback—because here at Orono Commons, we’ve definitely got talent!

National Skilled Nursing Care Week: Co****le Showdown with Popcorn & Cotton Candy
We had a blast during our Co****le Showdown as part of National Skilled Nursing Care Week! The weather was perfect for taking the fun outdoors, and our residents brought their game faces. They competed head-to-head until we crowned one champion—the best of the best!
The excitement was contagious, with cheers all around every time a bean bag landed in the hole.
Of course, no celebration at Orono Commons is complete without snacks! We added to the fun with movie theater popcorn and sweet cotton candy, making the day even more special.
It was a joyful afternoon full of friendly competition, laughter, and classic treats!
