Walking School Bus to Celebrate Pedestrian Safety Month
at Paradise Ridge Elementary

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – On Tuesday, September 30, Butte County Public Health’s Injury Prevention Program is teaming up with Paradise Ridge Elementary School (PRES) and the Paradise Police Department to host a Walking School Bus event. The event is supported by PRES students, families, local businesses, and the Town of Paradise.

A Walking School Bus is a group of students who walk to school together with adult leaders, following a planned route. This program helps students get to school safely, while also giving them time for exercise, fresh air, and socializing with friends. Walking to school also helps reduce traffic and pollution around the school.

Walking School Bus programs have many benefits. Students who walk regularly are more active, often arrive on time, and may show better focus in class. Programs can be led by parents, caregivers, or school staff, and can be adjusted to fit the needs of each school.

This event is part of California’s Pedestrian Safety Month and is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Great news story by North State Public Radio about the E. coli O157 contamination in Big Chico Creek. View and listen to the full story here: https://www.mynspr.org/news/2025-09-11/chicos-e-coli-outbreak-heres-the-top-rumor-what-public-health-says-now

5 reasons why Public Health say people likely aren’t the cause:

1. Upstream detections: The bacteria has been found as far upstream as the Five Mile Recreation Area. Beaudoin said that most unhoused residents live downstream, so the way it’s showing up in the creek points to another source.

2. How long it lasts in people: People don’t carry E. coli O157 for very long, usually only about two weeks. Beaudoin said public health has confirmed the bacteria has been in the creek since at least June, which is beyond the time a single infection would last.
No local cases among homeless residents: Public Health has

3. No reports of unhoused people who live in or around the park getting sick with E. coli O157. With this strain, Beaudoin said an infected person would likely go to a doctor or the hospital, and his department would be notified.

4. More bacteria than a few people could cause: The levels of E. coli found in multiple parts of the creek would likely require a very large amount of human waste. Beaudoin said it’s a lot more bacteria than a few people could produce.

5. E. coli O157 is usually linked to animals: Beaudoin said most outbreaks of this strain of E. coli are caused by livestock and birds, not people.

Is Chico’s E. coli outbreak from homeless people? Could septic tanks be to blame? Is Butte County still testing the creek? Public Health addressed community concerns — and here’s how they answered the question everyone’s asking.
