Great information from our funeral director, Lyle Kee for the KPERS recipients.

KPERS Death Benefit For Retired Members

There is a big change coming July 1, 2024, to the death benefit for retired KPERS members. KPERS is the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System. The retired death benefit will increase from $4000 to $6000.

If the retired KPERS member does NOT have their death benefit assigned to a funeral home, the death benefit is reduced by 20% to $4800. Why the 20% reduction? KPERS, by law, must withhold 20% for the IRS unless it is assigned to a funeral home. Make sure your death benefit is assigned to a funeral home.

If you assign your death benefit to a funeral home (funeral home # 1) and your family decides at the time of your passing they want to use a different funeral home (funeral home # 2), Kansas law requires funeral home # 1 to transfer your paperwork/assignment to funeral home # 2 at NO COST to your family.

You can go online to the KPERS website and print the KPERS one-page document to assign your retired death benefit to a funeral home. It takes less than five minutes to complete the KPERS form. It’s simple and it’s easy. If needed, KPERS can be reached at telephone # 785-296-6666.

Things To Remember:

1.) You must be retired.
2.) Your death benefit must be assigned to a funeral home for your family to receive the full $6000 death benefit for your funeral expenses, otherwise it is reduced to $4800.
3.) Your death benefit can be transferred to another funeral home without incurring any expense.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Lyle D. Kee
Funeral Director
