Kidney Transplants

Kidney Transplants Hi! I’m Vernell. Did you know I have ESRD? This is the journey to receive a kidney transplant

I have a genetic autoimmune disease called Good Pasture Syndrome. It attacks the lungs and kidneys. My lungs survived, but not my kidneys. It rapidly damaged my kidneys which stopped functioning. My disease has no treatments or cure. I have only 2 options. I can get a kidney transplant or spend the rest of my life on dialysis. Transplant provides the best quality of life, but the average wait on this list can be 5 years or longer. Now that we know about our nation’s organ shortage, we realize we can’t rely on only deceased donors. By being a living donor, a healthy person can donate one of their kidneys while they are still alive! Living donor kidneys also offer greater benefits. There’s a higher success rate and a kidney from a living donor works almost twice as long as a kidney from a deceased donor. Living donors not only help those in need get a healthy kidney, they also prevent those in need from getting sicker or dying while they wait. Dialysis is very hard on the body. I think living donors are the Energizer bunnies of human kindness. Their donation keeps on giving a daily dose of life!
Many in my family wish they were younger/healthier/a different blood type so they could donate one of their kidneys. If you were healthy enough, would you ever consider donating a kidney?

This list can seem incredibly discouraging leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair.

We will be meeting the kidney transplant team on September 5th at Tampa General Hospital. University of Washington will not accept my living donor because of their age. I will remain on their list, but a long wait because of my rare blood type. Tampa General does not have the age limit and will accept my living donor.
We would appreciate thoughts and prayers as we prepare for the trip to Florida in September and hope to receive good news from the evaluation.

Did you know that a kidney transplant from a living donor is the best option for those in need of a transplant? Unfortunately, many people are unable to donate a kidney due to health issues, financial reasons, already donating, having a transplant themselves, or other reasons. Despite this, they have decided to spread awareness and educate others about kidney failure and living donation. I hope to find more people who might be willing to consider living kidney donation. If you want to learn more, please contact me.

The shortage of organs available for transplant is a pressing issue, as there are over 100,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney from a deceased donor. Despite this, less than 20,000 transplants are performed each year, leaving many individuals waiting for a chance at a healthier life. To make matters worse, the number of people on dialysis far exceeds those on the transplant waiting list, with over 500,000 individuals undergoing treatment.

The generous gift of organ transplantation not only enhances the longevity of recipients but also allows them to live a fulfilling life, pursuing their passions and creating meaningful memories with family and friends.

I've been given the gift of a second chance at life, despite being diagnosed with Goodpasture Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that attacked my lungs and kidneys. Although my kidneys were severely damaged, I now have the opportunity to thrive through a kidney transplant. I choose to see this as a new beginning, not a dead end!
