Great insight! Get ahead of potential issues!
The 12-24 month stretch is one of the BEST in terms of language development. Our babies start to talk and it is cuteness overload for sure! 😍
Our children grow at different rates, however between 12-15 months of age we see them start to use words verbally.
They understand many words at this point and can follow simple step directions, begin to identify body parts, clothing items and common items or objects. At this point, they become motivated and able to communicate verbally and start to imitate everything and use their words independently without prompting to meet their wants and needs as well as name items they see! ❤️
Between 15-24 months they grow a ridiculous amount in this area and by two will be using approximately 50 words spontaneously on their own to communicate regularly. Some children will even be using two- and three-word phrases by this time. 🙃
When children don’t learn to use words between these ages, we begin to see frustration in both the child and parents. Tantrums typically become frequent and habits form as a result that can be tough to break. It can be exhausting and leave adults feeling hopeless and also fearful that their child isn’t learning as they’d expect.
Unfortunately, family members and even pediatricians or family doctors can mislead a parent by telling them to wait a few months, that their child is just “a late talker, a boy, second child, etc.”
Coaching parents on ways to improve language learning opportunities in their everyday routines and how they can encourage children to use their words is something I’m extremely passionate about. It’s maybe my favorite part of my work and I find it to be the most effective style of speech-language therapy. 😃
