Bumps + Babies tomorrow evening from 5:30-6:30pm on Zoom!! DM me or comment below for the class link!

This week we’ll be learning about the first year of communication development and how big of a deal it is for speech and language development...even though they aren’t “talking” yet! We’ll also be answering questions such as:

How do communication skills develop over the first twelve months?

What can I do during daily activities to help my child build a strong speech and language foundation?

When should I be concerned if my child isn’t meeting those “milestones” everyone talks about? 😊

Something I’ve found working with families is that there are some really simple tools that can make a world of a difference in a child’s speech and language growth. It begins within the first year and carries over throughout their entire lifetime.

Come join us for conversation, laughs and questions tomorrow evening!!

CORONAVIRUS + BREASTFEEDING
Can you continue to breastfeed if you get coronavirus? Yes.
Those who become infected shortly before giving birth and then begin breastfeeding, and those who become infected while breastfeeding, will produce specific secretory IgA antibodies and many other critical immune factors in their milk to protect their nursing infants and enhance their infants’ own immune responses. At this time, these immunologic factors will aid their infants’ bodies to respond more effectively to exposure and infection. Following good hygiene practices will also help reduce transfer of the virus.
If someone who is breastfeeding becomes ill, it is important not to interrupt nursing. The baby has already been exposed to the virus and will benefit most from continued breastfeeding.

Great insight! Get ahead of potential issues!

The 12-24 month stretch is one of the BEST in terms of language development. Our babies start to talk and it is cuteness overload for sure! 😍

Our children grow at different rates, however between 12-15 months of age we see them start to use words verbally.

They understand many words at this point and can follow simple step directions, begin to identify body parts, clothing items and common items or objects. At this point, they become motivated and able to communicate verbally and start to imitate everything and use their words independently without prompting to meet their wants and needs as well as name items they see! ❤️

Between 15-24 months they grow a ridiculous amount in this area and by two will be using approximately 50 words spontaneously on their own to communicate regularly. Some children will even be using two- and three-word phrases by this time. 🙃

When children don’t learn to use words between these ages, we begin to see frustration in both the child and parents. Tantrums typically become frequent and habits form as a result that can be tough to break. It can be exhausting and leave adults feeling hopeless and also fearful that their child isn’t learning as they’d expect.

Unfortunately, family members and even pediatricians or family doctors can mislead a parent by telling them to wait a few months, that their child is just “a late talker, a boy, second child, etc.”

Coaching parents on ways to improve language learning opportunities in their everyday routines and how they can encourage children to use their words is something I’m extremely passionate about. It’s maybe my favorite part of my work and I find it to be the most effective style of speech-language therapy. 😃

If you’re child is in this stage of development and you’re interested in ways to improve language opportunities, or, maybe your child is nearing the end of this timeframe and is not where they should be, contact us for a consultation!

Investing in your child’s language development early can be a game changer. Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance!

BUMPS + BABIES. 👶🏼

I took SO. MANY. NOTES. 😅🙌🏻😍

I even forgot to take a picture with our guest!!! 🙈

There is a lot to be learned from other professionals and Abigail knocked it out of the park with the knowledge she shared on breastfeeding, postpartum and her own new mommy experience.

Next week’s topic—Talk Baby, Talk!

We’ll focus on communication development and how to tune in and build those language skills within that first twelve months. 😆
