I often have many parents ask me how much their children should practice piano between lessons. This is a common question that most teachers are asked frequently. My answer is always, it is never the same for every student. Practicing is VERY important and will be the main way to continue to advance in your musical ability, but it will be different for everyone. Schedules can get busy and life gets in the way! Setting aside a chunk of time to practice is the best way to ensure continued growth. This could mean playing each new song three times a day or blocking out a few longer practice sessions each week, similar to how you would schedule a sports practice. Especially when just getting started, a few smaller sessions, more days a week seem to be the key to consistent growth, but it truly is an individualized plan for each student. If you see frustration while your child is practicing, let them take those needed breaks and return at a time when they can look at the song fresh a bit later. Setting up good practice is very important, but also keeping practice "drama" (as I like to call it) to a minimum will pay off in the long run with more being learned, and happier students and parents!
