I’m tired.

I’ve spent a lot of my adult life fighting some injustice and trying to bring about some change. I started a recycling drive at 13 when the ozone layer dominated the news and haven’t looked back. So many marches, petitions, canvassing, testifying before councils, going to court, bailing people out, creating bail funds, helping rewrite laws, being the only voice in the room in the dissent, being the only one in the room who looks like me, speaking voice for all marginalized folks.

I’m tired.

My activism looks a lot different nowadays. It looks like advocating for adequate death care for all. It looks like honoring each individual life in their death. Allowing people to be as they are, to grieve what they want to grieve and how they want to grieve. To allow humans to be human. If that’s not a radical act, then I dunno what is.

Across Mexico, Día de los Mu***os begins today, a sacred celebration of life, death, and the enduring bonds between them. Altars bloom with marigolds, candles, and favorite foods, guiding spirits home through the thin veil between worlds. It reminds us that death is not the end of belonging, but part of the sacred cycle of life.

This elemental blessing by Starhawk echoes this truth at the heart of this season: that death is not an ending, but a continuation of relationship, and renewed through the turning of the wheel.

"It's the most griefy tiiiiiime of the year!"

Yes folks, today is it: my hardest grief day all year. Today marks 13 years since my dad died in a car accident.

It crept up on me this year. I've been so busy with other things, and the pain of his loss literally stopped me in my tracks today.

So, I'm taking the day to honor my grief and spend time with it. Do some crying, some remembering, and maybe have a shot of whiskey in his memory.

He is the reason behind my deathwork. The grief and the aftermath of his death paved the road and ignited the spark for me. While I wish I still had him here with me, I owe him so much.

Below is a poem I wrote today about my grief, and how it is manifesting today, and two of my favorite photos of the two of us together.

Sending you all love today and every day.

Until we are ghosts,
Bryn

Rainn Wilson says he might quit acting and become a death doula: 'I think that there's a lot of hope to give people.'

Would anyone want to get a group together for this? 🖤

Grief platitudes and knee-jerk responses might be meant to comfort but they can be more harmful than supportive. Even if you’re coming from a good place! Instead, meeting people where they are at and offering the support they need for their situation is best. Not every response is applicable to every situation, so being present and thoughtful is incredibly important.
