Living a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a healthy weight and eating foods like fish and dark leafy green vegetables help lower your risk of eye disease. Specifically for eye health try to focus on leafy greens (spinach, kale), vibrant orange veggies (carrots, sweet potatoes), and red bell peppers to reduce the risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and dryness. Other foods like broccoli, romaine lettuce, collards, turnip greens, peas, and brussels sprouts are also packed with essential antioxidants like lutein, zeaxanthin, and vitamins A, C, and E. Eggs also are a good source of nutrition.

As we ramp up our time outdoors, it's important to remember SUNGLASSES aren't just for style & comfort. They provide protection from UV sunlight for our eyes in the same way that sunscreen helps protect our skin. Sunglasses help protect that layer from developing cancer, can protect you from getting sunburned eyes & from also getting surfer's eye. Wearing sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays can help to prevent and slow the progression cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). While it doesn't eliminate the risk, it does protect from structural damage to the retina caused by chronic sun exposure.

May is Healthy Vision Month! We encourage all patients to prioritize their eye health to help prevent vision loss. Remember to schedule your comprehensive, dilated eye exams & learn more about your family's eye history. When you choose to live a healthy lifestyle, like eating a balanced diet and staying physically active, you are also protecting your vision. Health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure can increase your risk of some eye diseases. Take charge of your eye health & preserve your sight.
