Late Summer: Reaping Your Harvest
by: Anne C. Crowley, Licensed Acupuncturist,Your Health Magazine

Yes, the last dog days of summer, the humidity, the dampness, and the stickiness are all part of the Earth season or Late Summer. Fruits come to fruition and so do we. Earth is well known as a nurturing energy – taking care of others and maybe not yourself. We must take satisfaction for all our hard work and reap our wonderful harvest.

The climatic condition of the earth is dampness. A stickiness and heaviness is in the air and resides in us. We move slower and feel heavier. It seems it takes twice as long to do something. Thoughts can be foggy as dampness in the mind can truly cause fogginess or disorientation. Remember it is a natural cycle, but the transition to late summer is a big downturn in the earth's energy. We can't help but feel that.

People who suffer from SAD disorders feel this more than most of us. My patient, Jena (changing the name), would "freak out" at this time of year. She had a propensity to cry easily, and her constitutional type is Metal. She would start this spontaneous crying right in August, Late Summer. After working with her and treating her through a cycle of seasons, this got much easier for her. She still noticed the downturn faster than most people, but she learned to flow with the seasons and accept what was naturally happening. She came to appreciate the movement and welcome all the changes of seasons.

We can also appreciate the virtues of earth: integrity, thoughtfulness, understanding, grounding, feeling "at home" in ourselves. It is a marked transition from spring and summer to autumn and winter. What a task – no wonder it is weighty.

As we go through August and September, be aware of the energy of the earth within you.

Following are some tips to bask in the gifts of the Earth Season:

• Savor the last juicy red tomatoes, peaches, and squash.

• Savor home – bring peace and tranquility to your home or even to the space you most love to be in at home. If you are not at your permanent home, find "home" within you.

• Nurture yourself – find at least one new way to take care of yourself, do it regularly.

• Notice hunger and seek good food. We can feel empty on many levels, body, mind or spirit – find “nourishment.”

• Reap your harvest – savor what you have sown. Don’t focus on what is undone, but rather on your accomplishments.

The Chinese organs for earth are the spleen (pancreas) and stomach. The stomach is about receiving and digesting food. Your mind and spirit also needed to digest ideas into usable form. Eat a good breakfast and schedule thoughtful projects during morning time. This will help you to digest and transform what you learn.

On the Chinese Clock, Stomach time is 7:00 am - 9:00 am and Spleen 9:00 am - 11:00 a.m. These are the best times to nourish and digest food and thoughts.

The spleen (metabolizer in the body) is about transformation. When challenges come your way, ask how you might transform the situation. How can you move worry or churning thoughts into thoughtful action?

When we flow with the cycles of nature rather than resist them, we follow our own natural cycle of transformation and challenges can become a lot easier. Savor the last glorious days of Late Summer, reap your harvest and prepare for the seasons to come.

"Go into your depths and be still with yourself––really listen to what comes up. Not only quiet the outside noise, quiet the noise of the mind. In the stillness, the mysteries of life unfold."

In the Midst of Winter by: Anne C. Crowley

As soon as the autumn approaches, I begin to hear the trepidation of the upcoming winter or downturn in the earth’s energy. The Christmas season holds us at bay for a while as it really creates a lot of yang energy which is more characteristic of summer. When the holidays are over the real feeling of winter sets in, and some of us start to feel a bit edgy.

This is a vote “FOR” the winter season and how we can come to appreciate it. Winter is about reflection, listening, being in the unknowing. This is what is so frightening to some people. It really is okay to be still, be with yourself, walk in nature and appreciate the stillness. At no other time of year will you experience the power of the stillness of nature.

Winter is about power, strength and determination. It is associated with the water element in Chinese medicine. When all is well we feel very strong and powerful inside. We are persistent and relentless (like the ocean) and clever (like streams). When things are out of balance, fear creeps in. We are sometimes frozen in fear and can’t move out of it. This is similar to the feeling some people get at this very yin time of year. It is a time of contraction, hibernating, going within.

In the children's book, "Wake Me In Spring", the mouse doesn't understand why his bear friend must miss out on the fun activities of winter. The bear begins to yawn and says to fear not, he will see his friend in spring. Because you see, bears know the nature of winter, and they must honor it.

Like the bear, we must gather our resources for the upcoming spring. Get more sleep, reflection, and restore your energy. It is no accident that the darkness sets in so early. Nature is saying “rest”. The Chinese, in the classical text The Nei Jing, say that if one is not careful to flow with nature in the current season, it could bring illness in the upcoming seasons.

Some Tips for Appreciating the Season of Winter

• Reflection – of the past year and the year to come

• Stillness – walk in nature and observe the absolute stillness of the trees

• Power – know your own power in moving through any situation

• Persistence – drive forward persistently when it is important to you and it serves others

• Wisdom – tap into the deep wisdom – the bottom of the ocean

• Cleverness – watch how clever water is through the movement of streams

Go into your depths and be still with yourself––really listen to what comes up. Not only quiet the outside noise, quiet the noise of the mind. In the stillness, the mysteries of life unfold. The water element is about "potential". Let that potential manifest through the power of stillness. Honor winter's role in the cycle of seasons. It is just as precious as any other. As the seed germinates, we will flourish in spring.

It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn't heard from Eeyore for several days, so they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore's stick house. Inside the house was Eeyore.

"Hello Eeyore," said Pooh.

"Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet," said Eeyore, in a Glum Sounding Voice.

"We just thought we'd check in on you," said Piglet, "because we hadn't heard from you, and so we wanted to know if you were okay."

Eeyore was silent for a moment. "Am I okay?" he asked, eventually. "Well, I don't know, to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That's what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. Which is why I haven't bothered you. Because you wouldn't want to waste your time hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All, would you now."

Pooh looked at Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side of Eeyore in his stick house.

Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?"

"We're sitting here with you," said Pooh, "because we are your friends. And true friends don't care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends are there for you anyway. And so here we are."

"Oh," said Eeyore. "Oh." And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit better.

Because Pooh and Piglet were There.

No more; no less.

I’m sharing this again as it’s such a great reminder that friends matter. It’s easy to get too busy to reach out and check in with those you love but it means the world and can make the difference between hope and despair.
With love
