How often do you need a massage?
How often someone needs a massage varies from person to person and changing life circumstances. Here are some guidelines for common ailments. These guidelines can help you get started with massage therapy and appointment frequency can be updated as your symptoms and/or circumstances change.
Are you experiencing chronic pain? A massage every 3 to 6 weeks can help. It is important to continue following up with your primary care physician for chronic health conditions.
Do you spend hours working at a desk? A massage every 4 to 8 weeks can help with muscle tension and stiffness. Getting adequate physical activity is also important. Massage therapy can help reduce muscle tension which can make exercising more comfortable.
Do you experience tension headaches? Start out with massage appointments every 2 to 4 weeks. Once tension headache frequency and/or severity improves, maintain results with massage appointments every 4 to 6 weeks.
Do you experience anxiety? Start out with massage appointments every 2 to 4 weeks. Once anxiety symptoms improve, maintain results with massage appointments every 4 to 6 weeks. Massage therapy is complementary to mental health therapy. It is best to see a mental health therapist to help you improve managing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Massage therapy helps reduce physical symptoms of anxiety by providing comfort and relaxation.
For general wellness, massage appointments are recommended every 4 to 8 weeks or as needed.
Massage therapy can be used on an as needed basis for temporary stressful events/periods of time or temporary muscle soreness from a new activity (ex. new workout routine, home improvement project, gardening).
Massage can also be used recreationally on an as needed basis.
