For Hailey Yentz, running is a place where she can clear her head and relax.
โThe feeling when you put on your shoes to go for a run and just like you and your feet hitting the ground, just kind of being in the moment,โ Yentz said.
โOnce you cross that finish line, it just feels like amazing to have accomplished what you've been training so hard for,โ Yentz said.
Besides racked-up awards for high school track and running for the ECU team, she has gained a group of friends miles long.
โThe community is just like a tight-knit, amazing, supportive community to be a part of,โ Yentz said.
During a training session in February, Yentz began feeling dizzy and seeing black spots.
โI knew it wasn't like normal to experience that,โ Yentz said. โNext thing you know, I collapse and fall to the floor. And then I was like, all blackness.โ
Yentz was experiencing a heart attack at just 21-years-old. Her teammate Claire, grabbed the AED, and her trainers began CPR.
"I was down for 10 minutes, and it was, they didn't stop CPR until EMS got there, and then they did the AED, three times with me. And once EMS got there, they ultimately took over,โ Yentz said.
