What’s your favorite way to exercise?

I always say, if exercise could be put in a pill, it would be the biggest blockbuster medication of all time. Here’s why:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Better insulin sensitivity. Exercise makes your cells and muscles more sensitive to insulin so you don’t need as much. Less insulin means less belly fat.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Reduced stress. I often hear patients say a good workout relieves excess stress. That’s because exercise reduces cortisol – the stress hormone. Too much cortisol and you become insulin resistant and store belly fat. Too much cortisol also makes you crave sugar and carbs and seek comfort food.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Improved brain health. Your brain on exercise performs so much better. Exercise improves memory, learning, and concentration. Vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac. Exercise helps to improve your mood, boost your energy, and reduce overall stress in your body and mind.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Reduced risk for chronic disease. Exercise does this through several mechanisms. It protects your heart and reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. It reduces inflammation (the cause of almost every disease of aging). And it balances hormones, therefore reducing breast and other common cancers.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Enhanced detoxification. Besides stimulating the colon, intense exercise allows your body to release toxins through your skin. It boosts the detoxification of environmental chemicals. Vigorous exercise will help you work up a sweat, but gentle exercise keeps your circulation going and flushes out all the toxic fluids that build up in your lymphatic system. Even just lying on your back and putting your legs straight up against the wall for 20 minutes can make a huge difference. ⁣⁣

Slowed aging process. If you want to turn back the clock figuratively, exercise becomes absolutely crucial. I will never forget a movie I saw in my 8th grade gym class about Larry Lewis. He would run five miles back and forth to work every day at (are you ready for this?) 105 years of age!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Improved s*xual function. Increased circulation and more energy are two of many reasons that consistent exercise can spark up your s*x life.

To say that food is an important part of our health is an understatement.

When I was in medical school, I learned very little about nutrition. Sadly, this is the case for most doctors.

The desire among physicians to understand the way that food interacts with our biology is growing because more physicians face limitations of drugs and surgery when it comes to treating lifestyle-related chronic diseases that cause the most suffering today.

The QUALITY of the proteins, fats, and carbs is super important.⁣

Sure, you are getting protein, fat, and carbs if you eat a factory-farmed feedlot hamburger full of hormones, antibiotics, along with fries and a soda. But is that the same as eating grass-fed beef, olive oil, and broccoli? Those are also protein, fat and carbs.⁣

Of course not!⁣

If you live on soda and donuts, it will send a very different set of instructions to your body than if you eat real, whole foods and lots of fruits and veggies.⁣

Another simple principle is to ask yourself the question: is this man-made or nature-made? It doesn’t take a nutrition PhD to figure that out.⁣

This study also showed that toxic heavy metals were detected in sweat and exceeded all other elimination routes (f***s and urine) with markedly higher levels of aluminum (3.75x), cadmium (25x), cobalt (7x), and lead (17x). This means that sweating is an effective means to clear out heavy metals from your body.

Anything that causes you to sweat is beneficial. For many people, endurance exercise is best because we tend to sweat more than resistance exercise, which serves its own benefits like building lean muscle mass and strengthening our bones. If cardio isn’t your thing, there are other ways to perspire, like saunas, hot baths, playing sports, or other activities that help to elevate your body temperature.

One of my favorite ways to sweat is the sauna. If you don’t have access to a sauna, check out your local gym, fitness club, wellness center, or YMCA. Many offer infrared, steam, or dry saunas with their membership (plus you get access to a gym, which makes it easier to throw in an exercise session too!).

If you’re new to the sauna, make sure you’re not staying in there too long. It’s best to start low and work your way up to get used to the heat. Beginners should check with their doctor before starting sauna use and should limit use to 5-10 minutes to begin with.

For more experienced sauna-goers, I recommend a maximum of 20 minutes with cooling breaks in between. You’ll find that you sweat more and faster in the sauna than traditional means of working out, so make sure to drink plenty of water with electrolytes.

There are other benefits of sauna use too. It's been shown to help lower inflammation, increase neuroplasticity, and improve cardiovascular and mental health.

Not too long ago, a group of doctors and public health experts at Massachusetts General Hospital noticed something striking: Many of the patients who routinely showed up in the emergency room requiring the most medical services were also the patients who seemed to be the most nutritionally vulnerable.

They were patients with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other largely food-related chronic diseases. For hospitals and health insurers, these are among the highest cost, highest-need patients. Working with a local nonprofit group called Community Services, the doctors decided to launch a study to see whether providing these patients with nutritious meals would have an impact on their healthcare outcomes.

The researchers recruited Medicaid and Medicare patients and split them into different groups. One group received regular deliveries of healthy meals that were made from scratch and designed by a registered dietitian: Each meal contained ingredients like locally caught seafood and locally grown Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, zucchinis, fruits and other fresh produce that nearby farms donated. Another group received nutritious meals, but they weren’t specifically tailored to their individual medical needs. The third group did not receive any of the nutritious meal deliveries. What the study found in the ensuing weeks was astonishing. The two groups that had nutritious meals had fewer hospital visits, ultimately resulting in a 16 percent reduction in their health care costs. And that was after deducting meal expenses.

The average monthly medical costs for a patient in the nutrition group shrank to about $843—much lower than the roughly $1,413 in medical costs for each patient in the control group.

These types of groups recognize what our federal government sadly does not: To tackle the crisis, our national food policies must be aligned with our healthcare policies. Instead of just treating rampant chronic diseases, we have to start preventing them—and we can do that with our forks.

That said, combining a whole, unprocessed diet with the right exercise does wonders for your health.⁣⁣⁣

Unfortunately, nearly half of Americans live a sedentary lifestyle and 88 percent don’t get enough exercise. No wonder we have an epidemic of broken brains and broken bodies!⁣⁣⁣

Let’s consider some of the numerous reasons why exercise is important:⁣

- Better insulin sensitivity.⁣

Exercise makes your cells and muscles more sensitive to insulin so you don’t need as much. Less insulin means less belly fat.⁣⁣⁣

- Reduced stress.⁣

I often hear patients say a good workout relieves excess stress. That’s because exercise reduces cortisone – the stress hormone. Too much cortisol and you become insulin resistant and store belly fat. Too much cortisol also makes you crave sugar and carbs and seek comfort food.⁣⁣⁣

- Improved brain health.⁣

Your brain on exercise performs so much better. Exercise improves memory, learning, and concentration. Vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac. Exercise creates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDMF), which is basically miracle grow for your brain. When you exercise, your brain becomes more elastic. Exercise also helps to improve your mood, boost your energy, and reduce overall stress in your body and mind.⁣⁣⁣

- Reduced risk for chronic disease. ⁣⁣⁣

Exercise does this through several mechanisms. It protects your heart and reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. It reduces inflammation (the cause of almost every disease of aging).

Mitochondria are key energy sources for our bodies. They are tiny factories housed within our cells that take the foods we eat and the oxygen we breathe and convert them into energy.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
That energy is called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, and it is used to support every function in our bodies.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Each cell holds hundreds or thousands of mitochondria; they are found in greater concentrations in active organs and tissues like the heart, brain, and muscles.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In fact, we have more than 100,000 trillion mitochondria in our bodies, and each one contains 17,000 little assembly lines for making ATP. Mitochondria are where metabolism happens.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
So, when your mitochondria aren’t working properly, your metabolism runs less efficiently and can even practically shut down. Problems occur because these powerful energy producers are VERY sensitive and easily damaged. When they are damaged, we suffer from low energy, fatigue, memory loss, pain, rapid aging, and more.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Fatigue is the most common symptom of poorly functioning mitochondria, and it is the reason we tend to feel pooped as we age.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Mitochondria are really important, but unfortunately many things can damage them, mainly through uncontrolled oxidative stress. That may sound complicated, but in reality we are all familiar with “oxidative stress”, even if some of us don’t know what the term means.⁣

And while traditional medicine relies mainly on medication to treat and prevent heart disease, we know that the way you eat, how much you exercise, how you manage stress, and minimizing your exposure to environmental toxins can all be much more effective levers for treating and reducing the risk of heart disease.⁣

Dr. Cindy Geyer joined me in a recent episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating heart disease. We dove into the root causes of inflammation, the role of cholesterol, insulin, and gut health in driving heart disease, and much more.⁣

The key to longevity and health is optimizing your mitochondria. Poorly functioning mitochondria are found in most chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, Parkinson’s, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia. It might also show up as fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain, intolerance to exercise, and rapid aging.⁣

Food is a great source of these and other phytonutrients that supercharge your mitochondria including blueberries, pomegranate seeds, grass fed beef and butter, broccoli, sardines, extra virgin olive oil, avocados and almonds. One of the best fuel sources for the mitochondria is MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides). It is one of the cleanest burning preferred fuel sources for your mitochondria, and an excellent performance enhancer before exercise.⁣

Protein provides us with the building blocks of life—helping us make muscle, connective tissue, hair, blood, enzymes, neurotransmitters, and more. Clearly, it’s important that we’re eating enough of this essential macronutrient if we want to feel strong, energized, and healthy.⁣

But many of us may not be getting enough protein in our daily diets. The RDA, or recommended dietary allowance, is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. To easily calculate your own RDA for protein, just multiply your weight in pounds by 0.36. For someone who is 150 pounds, that would be 54 grams of protein.⁣

Then there is the fact that the natural loss of muscle mass and strength as we age is correlated to all-cause mortality and linked to the incidence of many chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and stroke, hypertension, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. To make matters worse, these diseases increase protein degradation and reduce our ability to synthesize skeletal muscle, creating an even higher demand for protein. For these reasons, it’s especially important to eat more protein as we age.⁣

Learning to feed your mitochondria well, using clean burning fuels, avoiding sugar and starch, increasing good fats, and ensuring optimal levels of key nutrients can provide a metabolic tune up.
