Give your child a REASON to communicate! What does this even mean?!
It means don’t always give your child something immediately when they want it or put everything they may want within reach!
The truth is, if your child never has any challenges or difficulties getting their needs met, they also don’t have many reasons to communicate with you.
You need to create these situations to encourage them to communicate!
Want some Ideas? Check this out👇🏻 You are going to want to save this one!
-Place their favorite toys or snack within view but out of reach.
* This means don’t put your child’s toy on the lowest shelf move it to the top! Or put that favorite snack on top of the fridge!
-Put their favorite toy/snack in a clear container like a Tupperware container or a plastic baggy that may be difficult to open.
*Hand them the bag or container, and WAIT! Once they attempt to open and look to you or get frustrated, model/sign “HELP “ or “OPEN”.
--Offer piece by piece
* Don’t give your child everything all at once! They won’t have to ask you for anything! Break or offer a snack with small pieces and give them one piece at time, and WAIT. They will be enticed to continue to communicate for “MORE” of what they want. Toy options: puzzle/blocks.
-Use toys that are hard for the child to use on their own! We call these “People Toys”! They encourage your child to communicate because your child needs your help to make them work.
Examples:
Bubbles: Put your mouth up to the bubble wand, and wait for a response: model “blow!”. (words to model: help/open, pop, blow, smash, poke, stomp, bubble,)
Wind-up Toys/Squeeze toys: Activate toy model with action ex: “twist”/turn”, narrate as the toy moves “go, go”and when the toys stops, wait for your child to request to make it go again! (words to model: my turn, go/stop, turn, more, squeeze, out, in)
Balloons: hold the balloon up to your mouth and WAIT! Say: “BLOW!” - let the balloon fly around the room! Or blow up a small amount and PAUSE. Attempt to get your little one to request for “more” or “Blow” to continue making the balloon bigger. (Words to model: balloon, blow, pop, fly, more).
