Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Heartland Therapeutic Riding is a therapeutic riding center serving children and adults with disabilities in the Kansas City area, since 1978.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was founded because of the determination and drive of one mother who refused to accept that an individual with a disability should be excluded from horseback riding, because of their diagnosis. Literally proving where there is a will, there is a way. In 1977, Jean Baum established Heartland Therapeutic Riding after horseback riding was suggested as a potentially helpful (future) activity for her nine-month old daughter, who had special needs. Jean learned more about the benefits of therapeutic riding from Lida McGowan, who founded the Cheff Center for therapeutic riding, in Minnesota. After attending the lecture, Jean was convinced that the Kansas City area would greatly benefit from this type of center. After discovering a staunch opposition to the very idea of individuals with disabilities riding horses, Jean established the first therapeutic riding center in Kansas City. was one of the first therapeutic riding centers in the country, and has earned the status of PATH, Intl. Premier Accredited Center. Heartland currently serves more than 100 incredible riders and has a team of more than 120 amazing volunteers, yet we have never forgotten all of the hard work, determination and dedication that it took to get here. We are committed to helping individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. We strive to change lives, one ride at a time.

Educational Wednesdays: Why do we stretch our horses?

Doing stretches and exercises with your horse isn’t just a “nice extra” — it’s a huge part of keeping them happy, comfortable, and able to do their job well.
Here’s why it matters:

-Improves flexibility & range of motion: Just like people, horses get tight. Stretching helps keep their muscles and joints moving freely!
-Prevents injury: Regular stretching and strengthening exercises help balance the body, reduce strain on certain muscles, and lower the risk of injury.
-Builds strength the right way: Targeted exercises develop the muscles that support the spine and joints, which is especially important for our therapy horses who carry different riders.
-Enhances performance & movement: A horse that is loose and strong moves more freely, has better balance, and can engage properly in order to keep our riders safe!
-Supports comfort as they age: Stretching helps older horses stay mobile, manage stiffness, and maintain quality of life.

In short: stretching and exercises help your horse feel better, move better, and stay sound longer 🐎✨

Educational Wednesdays!

Why do we have a saddlefitter?

A saddle needs to fit a horse because it helps spread the rider’s weight evenly and prevents pressure on sensitive areas of the horse’s back. A poorly fitting saddle can cause pain, sores, and movement problems, making the horse uncomfortable or resistant. A well-fitting saddle keeps the horse comfortable, healthy, and able to move freely! We are so thankful to have such a wonderful saddlefitter here at HTR!

✨ Meet Randy! ✨

We’re excited to welcome Randy to the HTR family! This handsome black Arabian/Saddlebred gelding, born in 2006, officially joined our therapeutic riding program this month. Randy had a past career as a saddle seat show horse, so he’s bringing both style and heart to the barn. We can’t wait for our riders to get to know him!

Guess the Nose!

If you guessed Cash for the nose on Friday, you were correct!

This nose is attached to a horse that used to be a roping horse in his past life. Hard work turned to leisure, he now totes around riders and gets a nice coat of sunblock on his white nose in the summer. Do you know who it might be?👀
