Pediatric Care Specialists is a primary care physicians' office in Overland Park, Kansas. We see children from birth through age 18 years for both well-child physical exams, as well as sick visits.

While national data shows flu activity starting to trend slightly down, we’re seeing a second wave of flu locally — both at Children's Mercy and here in our office. We’re also noticing a small increase in strep throat cases.

If your child has symptoms and you’re unsure what’s going on, we offer walk-in hours Monday–Friday from 8:30am–12:00pm and 1:30pm–4:30pm.

PCR flu testing is available, and antiviral medications may be appropriate for some patients and are most effective when started early, following an in-office evaluation.

As always, we’re here to help guide families through a busy winter illness season. 💙

Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding, or exploring your options, you’re welcome here.

This is a calm, supportive space to share, learn, and connect with other parents. You can expect breastfeeding and latching assistance, formula feeding guidance and pumping help, weight checks, as well as introducing solids questions.

🎉 Celebrating 3 Years with Kirsten Carolan! 🎉

Please join us in celebrating Kirsten Carolan, RN BSN, CBS, on her 3-year anniversary with our practice! 💙

Kirsten is an integral part of our newborn team and works closely with Mindy, our lactation consultant, to support families during those early, important days. She has also stepped into a leadership role by helping guide our Infant Feeding Support Group, providing encouragement, education, and reassurance to new parents.

If you’ve welcomed a newborn with us, chances are you’ve had the special opportunity to work with Kirsten—and we know how much her calm presence and dedication mean to our families. We are so grateful to have her on our team!

New Year Fresh Start!
As we start the new year, please take a moment to review the following to-do list:

• Make sure you are registered for a patient portal account
• Update your contact information if anything has changed
• Confirm your insurance plan is still in-network and that we have the correct plan information
• Upload any new insurance cards, front and back images
• Update credit card or or FSA/HSA information if it changed
• Verify your pharmacy information is accurate
• Request an appointment for your child's next annual physical

Keeping your info up to date is especially important if you are requesting medication refills in-between visits, and also helps avoid billing delays and ensures smoother visits when in person.

REMINDER: We are hosting a Happy Bottoms Diaper Drive from now through January 30th, because diaper-need doesn’t end when the holidays do.

✳️ What We Need:
Diapers (all sizes — unopened and opened packages welcome!)
Wipes
Diaper cream

✳️ The Goal:
All collected items will be distributed directly to families in our community through HappyBottoms, helping keep babies clean, dry, and healthy.

✳️ How to Donate:
Drop off donations in our office anytime during walk-in hours:

You are probably already aware but this is definitely a year for flu.😫 Unfortunately, flu activity is at its highest level in several years, and Kansas is now classified as “high-level” for flu activity.

Confirmed influenza cases at Children's Mercy increased over 700% in just two weeks, reaching a record high of 1,173 cases for the week of 12/22–12/28.
For comparison, last year’s peak was 842 weekly cases in February 2025.

In our office, we’ve seen a similar spike in flu positives over the past couple of weeks. Numbers dipped slightly last week, likely due to the holidays and fewer visits. We can hope that means flu is slowing down, but it's not likely especially with the kids back in school this week.

We’re seeing a lot of winter, flu-like viruses right now. While the common cold virus is still responsible for many runny noses, flu activity increased sharply in our office last week, which mirrors what’s being reported nationally.

The good news: we’re seeing little to no RSV at this time, which is especially reassuring for babies and our pediatric community.

We are also seeing a small amount of strep throat, so it’s something to keep in mind if your child is sick.
