People often ask: "Why would you bring your child to the chiropractor?". There are many traditional (and beneficial) answers: colic, reflux, constipation, sports injuries, poor posture, etc but over the years there is an entirely new benefit that I have seen with the kiddos: better bodily awareness.

My patients that are brought in regularly from a young age begin to develop a better sense of their own bodies (interoception). They change from mom/dad bringing them to telling their parents "hey I don't feel good, can I get adjusted". "Somethings wrong with my neck/back/shoulder/knee and it's affecting me, can I go see Dr. Leahy?"

For parents it's knowing that they have someone they know will instantly be able to help and give advice instead of trying to decide what to do or where to go.

Last night my son told me there was something wrong with his leg after basketball practice. We went down to the basement (where I have a home table) and I assessed it, adjusted him, and showed him how to use a foam roller and stretch. (FYI, knee issues common during the puberty due to the ligaments stretching due to hormones causing misalignment)

A new patient (who'd had prior chiropractic care) was surprised when I asked her if she had a preference for how she was to be adjusted. She said that no one had ever asked her before and loved that there were options.

Some of our patients like to "hear the noise" (which is actually just gas releasing from the joints) and prefer traditional hands-on adjustments.

Others don't want to have to feel big movements or hear noise and respond better to other techniques.

In our office, we care about what works best for you! This may involve your preferences or our skill set to determine how you best improve.

Either way, it's about your care and your experience!

(Apparently some people like to be adjusted while lying on their brother)

Just a friendly reminder that you still need to drink water in the winter time! Did you know that hunger pangs can often be signs of dehydration? If you find yourself reaching for a snack (especially in the month of "extra goodies", try reaching for a glass of water first.

Staying hydrated is especially important when you are sick. Add a little himalayan salt if you are needing extra electrolytes and if you are buying electrolyte drinks make sure you read the label to look for dyes and sugar:(

Sleep seems to be so difficult for some many. There are definitely a variety of causes that can contribute to poor sleep such as diet, hormones, and stress. For kiddos tech and growth can be two big ones.

Here are some good tips to establish a good routine and if you are struggling, chiropractic can definitely help!

During this time of year more than others, I appreciate how much chiropractic adjustments help balance the body via the nervous system. Our patients report help with immune system function and stress reduction as two of the biggest "side effects" of adjustments.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome typically refers to issues at the wrist but did you know that the problem can actually start with the discs and nerves of the neck? Misalignment in that area, especially due to postural issues contribute to this issue.

In our office, we actually look at the entire chain: neck, shoulder, elbow, and yes, the wrist. Everything works together and much like a water hose you want to make sure flow occurs throughout the entire structure-not just at the end.
