Febrile seizures are a concern for many parents. Read below for more information:

🌡️ Otherwise healthy children can have a seizure with fever. About 3 to 4 % of children will have at least 1. The usual age range is 6 months to 5 years old. Most children will outgrow them.
🌡️ There may be a history of febrile seizures in other family members.
🌡️ Most febrile seizures will occur at temperatures of 102 degrees or higher. However, newer research strongly suggests it is how quickly a temperature rises and not how high the temperature itself is that can cause febrile seizure.
🌡️ If your child has a febrile seizure, make sure they are in a safe space and turn their head to the side. Time the seizure. If it is less than 5 minutes, let our office know right away. If it is longer than 5 minutes, call 911.

Picky eater at home? This is very common, especially for toddlers! See below for some tips:

🍎 Repetition: keep trying! It can take as many as 10 times of seeing and tasting a food before a child will accept it.
🥕 Help: let kids help in the kitchen (with age-appropriate tasks and lots of supervision). Sometimes seeing a food from raw to cooked can help make a new taste or texture seem less scary.
🍌 Family time: sit down and have meals with a family with no electronic distractions as often as possible. Kids seeing parents model good eating habits can help them want to be more adventurous.
🥦 Calm: stay calm. It’s normal for appetite to vary by day. Don’t pressure or force them to eat a certain amount. Offer them the food and see what they will eat. Don’t punish them for not finishing a serving or for not trying a certain food. Growth is monitored regularly at well child checks to make sure they are getting what they need.
🍓 Fun: make food more exciting! Try creating colorful plates with different fruits/vegetables, cut or arrange food into fun shapes and patterns, use a variety of textures.

Child throwing up and/or having diarrhea? We have been seeing an increased amount of kids coming in with these symptoms over the past few weeks.

🤢 Most viral vomiting will last 24-36 hours. Diarrhea lasts longer but should gradually slow over the next several days.
🤢 Many viruses can cause stomach symptoms. Some children with vomiting are testing positive for Flu B. Sometimes we don’t know which specific virus is causing symptoms
🤢 The most important thing is keeping a child hydrated. You can limit solids for the first 24 hours or so and only offer liquids. If your child is over the age of 1 year, electrolyte-containing solutions, like Pedialyte, can be helpful. Signs of dehydration include less frequent peeing, not making as many tears, dry tongue/mouth.
🤢 Restart foods slowly. Start with bland foods, like toast. Advance as tolerated.
🤢 Use lots of hand washing and soap to prevent spread. Some stomach viruses can survive hand sanitizer. Use a dilute bleach solution to clean hard surfaces.
🤢 Your child should be seen if vomiting continued longer than 24-36 hours (especially if it is worsening), you see blood in their p**p or vomit, or if you have concerns that your child may be dehydrated. Most children recover quickly on their own and do not need any prescription medications!

🤧 Did you know Spring seasonal allergies can start as early as February? This is when some trees start to produce pollen.

🤧 Allergies or cold? It can be hard to tell- especially at this time of year! Colds last 7-10 days, allergies can last weeks to months. Both can cause cough and congestion but colds sometimes come with fever and body aches. Allergies can be more itchy.

🤧 What are some ways to help with allergies without medication? Wash linens like bedding and towels weekly, change clothes and shower after playing outdoors, keep windows closed.

🤧 What are some medications to help with allergies? Try an over-the-counter antihistamine by mouth (Allegra, Claritin, Xyzal, Zyrtec), steroid nasal spray (Flonase, Nasocort, Nasonex), anti-histamine nasal spray (Astelin, Astepro). If eyes are itchy you can use a cold washcloth and/or over-the-counter eye drops (Pataday, Patenol).

🤧 Still have questions or concerns? Make an appointment for an office visit! We can examine your child and help decide if your child may need to see an Allergist for further management.
