September marks NICU Awareness Month, and we’re honoring the strength of our most fragile newborns and the expert, compassionate teams who care for them.

Aurora Borchers was born on November 4, 2023, with a bilateral cleft palate and a hemangioma, conditions that went undetected during pregnancy. Her NICU stay was filled with uncertainty but also with many meaningful connections.

“What seemed like a normal pregnancy ended in a difficult labor and a surprise NICU stay. I knew Aurora would be in good hands, but I never anticipated meeting life-changing people. Nurse Amy has since retired, but she, and many others, including Dr. Christopher left a permanent stamp on my heart.” — Amanda, Aurora’s mom

Dr. Christopher oversaw Aurora’s cleft palate care and remained a steady, reassuring presence throughout her journey. He even attended her first birthday. Today, he proudly calls Aurora’s outcome a “best case scenario.”

Huge thanks to our NICU team at Overland Park Regional Medical Center for the incredible care, compassion and dedication you show every day. They make stories like Aurora’s possible.

For many patients with blood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, a blood stem cell transplant – made possible by lifesaving donations – is the best option for survival. According to the .S. Health Resources and Services Administration, 70% of patients who need a blood stem cell transplant don't have a fully matched donor in their family, leading them to rely on the NMDP.

As part of our larger HCA Healthcare network, we’re proud to help meet this critical need through the HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network. This extensive network is among the largest providers of unrelated bone marrow donor transplants in the U.S., caring for tens of thousands of patients each year.

Thinking about becoming a donor? Here are a few common misconceptions and facts about blood stem cell and bone marrow donation:

❌ Myth: Donation is very painful.
✅ Fact: Discomfort and side effects vary from person to person, but it may be less painful than you think.

❌ Myth: Donation is expensive.
✅ Fact: Donating is free. All of your medical and travel expenses are covered by NMDP, and they can also help cover any lost wages due to donation.

❌ Myth: Only males can donate blood stem cells or bone marrow.
✅ Fact: Anyone between age 18 and 40 who meets the medical requirements can donate, regardless of gender.

You could be a match for someone in need. Learn more and join the registry today: https://bit.ly/46jzJoS.

As part of HCA Healthcare, we’re proud to share that the HCA Healthcare Foundation will continue their collaboration with the American Heart Association on their Getting to the Heart of Stroke™ initiative through $3.9 million in funding and support. Together, the American Heart Association, HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation are working to foster cardiovascular health, prevent stroke and improve patient outcomes by increasing cardiology and neurology collaboration, deploying evidence-based education and interventions, and identifying and minimizing health disparities.

🤝 With support from the HCA Healthcare Foundation, Getting to the Heart of Stroke™ has reached over 200 million individuals with evidence-informed education on AFib and stroke risk, while expanding outreach to more than 160 community organizations, including clinics, schools, food pantries and libraries, and implementing intervention programs focused on controlling blood pressure, improving nutrition security and maternal health.

🏥 Through enhanced coordination between neurologists and cardiologists, leading to improved in-hospital diagnostic testing and cardiac monitoring, ten of HCA Healthcare’s comprehensive stroke centers participating in Getting to the Heart of Stroke™ have improved stroke cause identification by 33%, and the continued partnership will enable these quality improvement efforts at our 43 comprehensive stroke centers.

This week, we celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness Week and the compassionate lactation consultants who serve our families.

Here’s what inspires them:

Beverly
"I became an IBCLC to get back to work and help mothers get a good start on this healthy, loving practice. Proud to help new families find success with this challenging task."

Janie
"I started because I saw so many moms needing special breastfeeding help and back in the day it was hard to find."

Barb
"To help moms and meet them at the place of their greatest need. Especially when a mom says she is most worried about breastfeeding and I love encouraging them and say, you can do this."

Maren
"I want to be that support for mom to help her learn and not feel alone. I feel honored to help moms with such a special bond with their babies! I know how raw they are after birth so just have one kind person to take the time to see them and genuinely listen and care is so important! Love to be that person for them!!"

Did you know that practicing safe sleep habits helps reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)?

Here's a quick reminder of safe sleep practices:
- Always place baby on their back for every nap and bedtime
- Use a firm, flat mattress in a safety-approved crib
- Keep the crib free of blankets, bumpers, toys, and pillows
- Baby should sleep in the same room, but not the same bed
- Dress baby in a sleep sack or footed pajamas to keep them cozy

Take Your Child to Work Day was a blast!

We welcomed nearly 100 "healthcare explorers" and they got the full experience! From running surgical robots and learning why handwashing matters, to checking out therapy services and weighing "newborn" NICU babies. The best part? They saw how every department comes together to provide our patients high-quality care.

Thank you to all who participated. We hope this event inspired the next generation of healthcare leaders.
