Immunotherapy has revolutionized how doctors treat certain types of cancer. It harnesses the power of the body's own immune system to fight cancer. The immune system is smart and adaptable just like cancer, so it can learn to recognize cancer cells and attack them. The immune system also has the ability to remember specific cancer cells so they can be found and targeted in the future if the cancer returns, which may provide a long-lasting response to treatment.

August is Summer Sun Safety Month. As most people spend extra time outdoors during the summer months, it’s even more important at this time of the year to make protecting skin a high priority. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can add a layer of protection for your head from harmful UV rays, especially when you're in the sun between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wearing sunglasses with a UV block will also help shield your eyes. And, of course, don't forget your sunscreen, preferably with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.

Consider adding a dietitian to your medical team. Research indicates that good nutrition during cancer treatment has been shown to improve recovery. A dietitian can design a plan that helps people get the nutrition they need while being treated for cancer. It is ideal to meet with a dietitian or nutritionist very soon after diagnosis. Not all health care teams offer this resource on staff, but can provide a referral.

Many people report thinking and memory problems while going through cancer treatment. This may include trouble remembering names, dates and telephone numbers, memory lapses during tasks or conversations and having difficulty paying attention. These symptoms represent cognitive dysfunction, commonly known as "chemo brain." Several types of cancer and different treatments may cause the condition so it's a good idea to ask your doctor if this is a side effect you should expect. Contact your health care team when you first notice symptoms.
