The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration created National Prescription Drug Takeback Day as a way to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of prescription drug disposal. It is also an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. Go to https://www.dea.gov/takebackday to find a location near you!

Today, October 17, is National Mammography Day! The focus is on reminding women to schedule a mammogram if they have not had one within the past 12 months. Early detection of breast cancer can mean early treatment that may save lives. Advances in mammography mean today's mammograms offer more detailed images of breast tissue, making it easier to detect some types of breast cancer.

Today, October 13, is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Metastatic disease is classified as Stage IV and indicates that cancerous cells have metastasized (spread) beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to distant sites in the body, most commonly, the bones, lungs, liver or brain. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been recognized since 1985, it wasn't until 2009 that this day was officially declared to recognize those facing a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. The goal is to raise the public's awareness of the challenges faced by people living with Stage IV breast cancer.

Saturday, October 11 will be a day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative caregivers and programs around the world. The theme is "Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care,” and the focus is on building on last year's campaign of the importance of palliative care for quality of life and advocating for equitable access for all. The World Hospice Palliative Care Alliance also aims to focus on empowering people and compassionate communities, implementing palliative care policies to improve access and integrating palliative care fully into health care systems. Palliative care is given to improve the quality of life and help reduce pain in people who have a serious or life-threatening disease, such as cancer.

Receiving a liver cancer diagnosis is understandably troubling because the liver is indispensable to your body. Each year in October, groups aim to educate the public about the risk factors for developing liver cancer and the types of new treatments that are becoming available. Primary liver cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the liver. Cancer that develops in other parts of the body and metastasizes (spreads) to the liver is not primary liver cancer. It's important to recognize the difference between these two and the different treatment approaches required.

Each October, there is a renewed focus around the world to raise awareness about breast cancer and early detection. Treatment advances are offering cures for early-stage diagnoses, as well as helping people with advanced breast cancer live longer while enjoying a higher quality of life. Women are encouraged to do breast self-exams and have regularly scheduled mammograms. Men can get breast cancer, too, making it crucial they are aware of their risk factors and report any breast changes to their doctor. Schedule your next appointment now.

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) designates October as American Pharmacists Month to acknowledge the invaluable contributions pharmacists and pharmacy team members make to health care. For people diagnosed with cancer, they may see an oncology pharmacist who is specially trained to understand the medications used to treat cancer and blood disorders. Medications to treat cancer are not always available at traditional pharmacies and must be supplied by a specialty pharmacy where an oncology pharmacist usually works.
