🔥🔥🔥Last night, Congress passed a critical amendment to investigate whether the U.S. military weaponized ticks with Lyme and other tick-borne diseases during the Cold War. Authored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), it has been included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26 NDAA) (S. 1071), which has cleared both chambers of Congress and is now headed to the President’s desk.
“Smith’s amendments have been inspired in-part by the explosion of Lyme disease in New Jersey and Kris Newby’s book, "Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons." The book includes in-depth interviews with and the personal files of Dr. W***y Burgdorfer—the federal researcher and U.S. bioweapons specialist credited with discovering Lyme disease—who later revealed that he and other bio-weapons specialists injected ticks with pathogens, in order to cause severe disability, disease, and even death to potential enemies in unsuspecting ways.”

Why this important to the millions suffering from tick-borne diseases:👇
Tick and the diseases that they carry are a growing threat to Americans, the military, and agriculture. Record numbers of tick bites have been observed in New York (2024), Maine (2024), and Wisconsin (2023). The vicious Lone Star tick, previously limited to the southern U.S., is creeping northwards, spreading new deadly diseases and the alpha gal red meat allergy. Yet, research into prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tick-borne diseases is significantly underfunded compared to less prevalent diseases like malaria and West Nile virus.
Releases of genetically modified, weaponized organisms can have long-lasting effects on the environment and human/animal health, and this is why it’s important to declassify these decades-old military secrets. Knowledge of where engineered organisms escaped into the wilds will save lives and research dollars. If these microbes have been genetically altered, we need a more intelligent approach to disease control and treatment. If the military harmed U.S. citizens through irresponsible experiments, the government should help remedy the situation.
If the Lyme-area outbreak was caused by a hostile act by a foreign actor, we need better protections in the future.
Identifying the root cause of an epidemic directly informs targeted treatment approaches, surveillance priorities, containment strategies, and biosecurity reforms critical to preventing future outbreaks.
