It's that time of year so let's talk eye safety.

There are about 2.5 million eye injuries each year in the U.S. And they increase - understandably - in the summer. Half of those happen at home.

Dr. Sahni has a few reminders for everyone. For starters, make sure to wear those sunglasses when you're outside during daylight. That will help protect you from vision damaging UV light. Then the obvious suggestion - protective eyewear for outdoor chores around home like trimming, mowing, cutting and moving trees and brush. If you like to swim, wear a mask or swim goggles to protect your eyes from chlorine. And, finally, cover those eyes when playing sports, especially those with balls of any kind that can hit your face (or when bike riding when rocks, limbs, etc., can damage eyes).

More than 1 billion people around the world have a disability.

Accessibility is a game changer for them. And, in particular, digital accessibility for people with vision loss makes all the difference.

So, today, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we want to shine a light on the importance of digital accessibility and inclusion for everyone. From websites to apps, we want to work toward a day when our digital world is usable by people of all abilities. Together, we can build a more inclusive, accessible future for all.

You need to add an important appointment to your calendar!

May is Healthy Vision Month and a great time to schedule a comprehensive, dilated eye exam. An eye care professional will use drops to widen the pupils to check for common vision problems and eye diseases. Taking care of our eyes should be a life priority, just like eating healthy and participating in physical activity. This is the best way to find out if glasses or contacts are needed, or if someone is in the early stages of an eye-related diseases.

What is the best food for our eyes? Are you thinking about carrots? We grew up thinking carrots were the best food for eye health, but in reality we should focus on including fresh fruits and dark leafy greens in our diet. These contain Vitamins C and E, which are the most beneficial vitamins for our eyes. Learn the truth behind protecting your eyes from our friends at Harvard Medical School https://bit.ly/3W4kbAE

Happy Sports Eye Safety Month!

Did you know… more than 30,000 sports-related eye injuries occur each year in The United States? Nearly 90% of these could be avoided if the athlete was wearing protective eyewear. Even athletes who wear contacts or glasses should still wear eye protection. Consistency is key and is more assured when parents start kids early and adults adopt the practice for themselves. Knowing if your sport carries a higher risk of eye injury is important. Basketball, boxing, and full-contact martial arts, pose an extremely high risk of serious injury. Shatterproof plastic glasses called polycarbonate lenses are recommended by the American Association of Ophthalmology for all mainstream sports including tennis, racquet ball, soccer, and field hockey. Or bike riding, for that matter!

During March we observe Save Your Vision Month. It's a reminder to protect your eyes and preserve your vision.

That starts with a good diet filled with leafy greens and brightly colored fruits and vegetables, plus fish like salmon, tuna, or sardines. And since our lives are now spent with prolonged exposure to screens, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes take a 20 second break and look 20 feet away to give your eyes a chance to relax.

Let's not forget safety glasses. If you're mewing, trimming, or doing anything where particles can get in your eyes, make sure to have glasses that meet minimum OSHA requirements. And, finally, regular checkups with your eye doctor for identifying and treating problems.
