Black Cohosh for Menopausal Support
What it is: A root extract traditionally used in Native American and European herbal medicine to relieve symptoms associated with hormonal transitions—especially hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes.
How it works (functional perspective):
· Appears to act on serotonin and dopamine receptors in the hypothalamus (the body’s temperature and mood regulator), rather than directly on estrogen receptors.
· May help stabilize vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, sweating, sleep disruption) by improving hypothalamic feedback and vascular tone.
· Provides mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that can support joint comfort and overall well-being.
Evidence: Clinical trials have shown modest but consistent improvements in frequency and intensity of hot flashes, especially in perimenopausal and early postmenopausal women. Some studies suggest it may complement low-dose hormone therapy or be used when hormones are contraindicated.
Precautions:
· Generally well tolerated for up to 6 months of use.
· Should be avoided in women with liver disease or unexplained hepatic symptoms.
· Always review with a practitioner before combining with SSRIs, hormone therapy, or other botanicals that influence estrogen pathways or liver metabolism.
