One of the things I’ve learned working in skilled nursing is that families don’t just choose a place… they’re trusting you with someone they love.
That became very real for our own family when we were navigating care decisions for my mother-in-law, Harriet. Sitting on the other side of the table — asking questions, worrying if we were making the right choice, wanting to make sure she felt safe and cared for — gave me a completely different perspective. It reminded me how emotional and heavy these decisions can feel.
It’s also why the work we do at Aspen is so personal to me.
Every single day I watch our team show up in ways that go far beyond job descriptions — sitting with residents who need a little extra time, celebrating therapy milestones that might seem small to others but mean everything to that person, and supporting families through some really big transitions.
Some of our residents are here for a short time to get stronger after a hospital stay. Others live here and truly become part of our Aspen family. And what I love most is that no matter how long someone is here, they are known — their stories, their routines, what makes them smile.
You’ll hear laughter in the halls, see therapy working miracles, and feel the heart of this place the minute you walk in. It’s not perfect (no place is), but it’s real, and it’s full of people who care deeply about what they do.
Walking through this personally with Harriet reminded me why this work matters so much — because behind every decision is a family just trying to do their best for someone they love.
If you’re trying to figure out next steps for someone you love, I’m always happy to talk — even if it’s just to answer questions or help you think through options.
