The Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) strongly opposes the Department of Education’s proposed reclassification that would exclude nursing from the definition of “professional degree” programs. This change could limit nurses’ access to federal graduate loans, threaten the nursing workforce and restrict opportunities for advanced education across the United States.
Nursing is the most trusted profession, built on rigorous training, critical thinking and clinical expertise. This proposed definition overlooks the skills and competencies required to deliver safe, high quality, patient centered care and jeopardizes access to advanced practice degrees for APRNs, nurse educators, nurse executives, researchers and others advancing the profession.
SGNA stands with the American Nurses Association—read their full statement here: https://www.nursingworld.org/news/news-releases/2025/statement-from-the-american-nurses-association-on-proposed-federal-loan-policy-changes/
