March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and truthfully, I’ve had enough.

Colorectal cancer is now the deadliest cancer in people under 50, yet it remains underfunded and underdiscussed while rates continue to rise.

40 years. One purpose: advancing excellence in GI nursing.

In 1986, 669 nurses sat for the first gastroenterology certification exam—launching what would become the CGRN credential and a lasting commitment to professional excellence.

Four decades later, ABCGN continues to elevate GI nursing by strengthening the value of certification, modernizing certification and recertification practices, and expanding access for nurses across the profession. Through innovation, collaboration, and volunteer leadership, we’re focused on ensuring certification remains relevant, rigorous, and reflective of today’s GI nursing practice.

As we celebrate 40 years, we honor the nurses, volunteers, and leaders who built this program—and we look ahead to what’s next for GI nursing.

The Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) strongly opposes the Department of Education’s proposed reclassification that would exclude nursing from the definition of “professional degree” programs. This change could limit nurses’ access to federal graduate loans, threaten the nursing workforce and restrict opportunities for advanced education across the United States.

Nursing is the most trusted profession, built on rigorous training, critical thinking and clinical expertise. This proposed definition overlooks the skills and competencies required to deliver safe, high quality, patient centered care and jeopardizes access to advanced practice degrees for APRNs, nurse educators, nurse executives, researchers and others advancing the profession.
