We don’t want a lot for Christmas, we just want our patients to use these things.
1. Electric toothbrush 🪥: Sonicare (any model) or Oral B I.O. (Series 3 or above). We find that the Oral B is better for patients with recession, or with small mouths.
2. Ultrasonic dental cleaner 🦠 : we are loving this for cleaning our retainers, nightguards, Invisalign, and electric toothbrush heads! It kills germs with ultrasonic vibrations.
3. Waterpik 💦 : we love love love a Waterpik for patients with fixed (“permanent”) retainers, implants, bridges, and deep periodontal pockets. We particularly like the portable version because you can bring it in the shower (don’t submerge it), which minimizes water spray mess.

We have a love/hate relationship with Oral B brushes. They work great, but this part is impossible to keep clean 😷 (we even reached out the manufacturer for any other tips).
We found this appliance that was actually indicated for toothbrush heads in addition to nightguards/ retainers/etc., so we thought we’d give it a try. This particular brand is Zima (not an ad).
Fun fact 🤓 even without their sterilizing tabs, the operating ultrasonic frequency kills bacteria by destroying cell membranes 🦠 We really didn’t want something that required proprietary tablets to be effective, so this test was run without a sterilizing tab.
📝 This standard pod fits regular Oral B heads/ nightguards/ retainers just fine, but if we were to repurchase, we’d spring for the Pro, as it would better fit the Oral B I.O. line (pictured in video).

Is iced coffee bad for your teeth? Whether you like yours hot or iced, all coffee is acidic and can lead to tooth sensitivity and increase the risk of cavities if consumed in excess. It can also stain your teeth over time. Many commercially available iced coffees contain added sugars or sweetened syrups, which can promote tooth decay and gum disease if consumed frequently. But don’t worry - we won’t ask you to take away your iced coffee for good!

To minimize potential negative effects on your teeth while enjoying iced coffee:
- Limit consumption of sugary or sweetened varieties.
- Drink through a straw positioned toward the back of your mouth to reduce contact with teeth.
- Rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee to help neutralize acidity and reduce staining.
- Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily.
