What Inclusion Means to Us

Inclusion means creating spaces where everyone belongs, is valued, and has the opportunity to succeed. It’s about recognizing individual strengths, honoring differences, and providing the supports people need to reach their goals.

To us, inclusion looks like meaningful access to education, employment, and community life. It means listening to lived experiences, removing barriers, and ensuring individuals are not just present—but actively participating and thriving.

Inclusion is not a one-time effort. It’s a commitment we make every day to build communities where everyone has a voice and a path forward.

Circle of Control Reminder

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when we focus on things that are out of our hands. The Circle of Control helps us pause and refocus our energy on what we can control.

You can’t always control other people, outcomes, or unexpected changes—but you can control:
• Your effort
• Your attitude
• How you respond to challenges
• The choices you make each day

When we put our energy into what’s inside our circle, we build confidence, reduce stress, and make real progress toward our goals.

Today’s reminder: Let go of what you can’t control, and take ownership of what you can. Small, intentional choices add up.

Our GOAA program site visit was a valuable and engaging experience for our students. During the visit, the GOAA team went over what the GOAA program is and how it operates at the airport, giving students a clearer understanding of the purpose of the program and the opportunities it provides.

Experiences like this help students connect classroom learning to real-world career pathways and expand their understanding of future employment opportunities.

Thank you to the GOAA team for hosting our students and providing such an informative visit.

The site visit to the OCLS Melrose Center was an incredible experience. The Melrose Center at Orlando Public Library is a collaborative workspace that provides access to technology, resources, and training in areas such as digital media, design, fabrication, and entrepreneurship.

Students had the opportunity to explore the space, learn about the different creative labs, and see how these resources can support career exploration and skill development. It was inspiring to watch students engage with new tools and imagine future possibilities.

Thank you to the OCLS Melrose Center team for welcoming our students and making this visit both informative and engaging.

Ali’s Story

The Florida Institute for Community Inclusion was founded in 2016. In reality we were founded back in 1992, with the birth of my sister Alice (Ali). Ali was diagnosed with developmental delay when she was 3. When she was 6 her diagnosis was PDD-NOS. Going to school and reaching all the “typical” milestones was a challenge for Ali, and our family. But through it all, when the doctors, teachers and therapists told us what Ali could not do, our family never gave up on our Faith that God had a purpose and a plan for our sweet Ali. Flash forward to 2016, the girl doctors, teachers, and therapists said would never walk properly (vertigo) would never talk properly (speech delays) and would never graduate high school because of her PDD-NOS, well that girl is now the President of a nonprofit organization, has an AA degree and works as a paraprofessional helping elementary school students with disabilities. Today, Ali is 25, loves the outdoors, music, her dogs, and spending time with her boyfriend.

Ali came to me in August 2016 after I had graduated from UCF with my doctorate in Educational Leadership. Ali asked me what was I going to do with the rest of my life. In that moment I wasn’t quite sure of God’s plan for me. I told Ali I wasn’t sure. In that moment she challenged me. Ali asked me if I would consider helping her find ways to help others like her, who society had given up on (her words). So we brainstormed A LOT and we decided with her ideas, my knowledge and training, with help from friends and a whole lot of faith and prayer, we would start a nonprofit organization to help those with disabilities who are still trying to find their purpose and realize God’s plan.

Today, we have a postsecondary program for students over 22 who still need to work on academic goals and those who are still searching to find their purpose. We also have a summer camp for students with disabilities, and we are service providers for Vocational Rehabilitation. We are proud of our achievements and are excited about future opportunities and ways we can ensure all people, regardless of their abilities feel included and purposeful in their communities.
