On my walk this morning of course I noticed everyone’s yard. The grass, the decor, the flowers. You can have the most perfect yard sitting right next to one that is overgrown.
When I was younger, I would judge the overgrown houses. I think they were lazy. But now that I’m older, I totally empathize and wonder if they are parents of an athlete, their lawnmower broke down and they don’t have the money to fix it. Or they have illness or they travel a lot for work.
When listening to peoples stories in our office, I will often ask, was the other person going through anything? What do you think their perception was? Is there a history to this story that might have impacted the situation? Has anything happened in their history? Has anything happened in yours? Getting older I think I switched from judgment to curiosity. And we bring that curiosity into our office. Ask the questions that sometimes we forget to ask ourselves.
And sometimes we need to be reminded to show sympathy, empathy, compassion. Not only for others before ourselves.
