Do you remember being little and having daydreaming about what you were going to be when you grew up?

Maybe it was a teacher, firefighter, or maybe even a doctor.

Every year, Dr. Madden visits a local preschool to talk about what it means to grow up and become a doctor because we know that seeing someone in a role you dream about matters.

Some of the most meaningful impact we make isn’t in urgent care rooms. It’s in shaping what kids believe is possible. We don’t just care for kids when they’re sick. We believe in who they’re becoming 🩵

If it feels like everyone you know has something right now… you’re not imagining it.

We’re seeing flu.
RSV.
Norovirus.
Common colds that just won’t quit.
And yes, COVID is still circulating too.

Winter viruses rotate through classrooms, daycares, and sports teams fast this time of year. Some hit hard and suddenly. Others linger. A few look mild at first and then escalate.

The good news?
Most of these illnesses are manageable with the right support and a watchful eye.

The important part is knowing when to ride it out at home and when it’s time to come in to see us.

If your child:
• Is struggling to breathe
• Can’t keep fluids down
• Seems unusually lethargic
• Has a high fever that won’t respond to medication

The 24-hour fever-free “rule” doesn’t exist to make your life more inconvenient, we promise!

All parents have been there. Your child wakes up with a fever, but it breaks in the evening and they’re feeling great 🙌🏼 You’re ecstatic because you have a stacked schedule the next day, and obviously they’re “fine,” so they’re going to school tomorrow… right?!

Not so fast. Here’s why we really want to wait 24 hours after a fever before reintegrating into the world 👇🏼

1️⃣ A fever is a sign the immune system is actively working. A lower number on the thermometer doesn’t necessarily mean your little one is fully better. Staying home for 24 hours allows for extra rest and true recovery.

2️⃣ That inconvenience you’re feeling? We don’t want to pass it on to others. Your kiddo can still be contagious within 24 hours of a fever, which means the likelihood of spreading germs is high. Keeping your child home helps protect everyone.

3️⃣ You don’t want to prolong the sickness, right? Your child’s immune system can still be vulnerable in the 24 hours after a fever, making them more likely to pick up something else.

We know keeping kids home from school can throw a huge wrench in daily life, especially when they seem all better, but that extra day often prevents setbacks and helps stop germs from spreading to other kids 🩵
